Would you be concerned with these photos?

I have recently seen a pic of a little boy, aged 16 months, whose mother caught a pic of him while in the car driving. One of his eyes, pupils were "white" and the other normal, or red, I believe. Cant remember exactly. All I know, is that the mother immediately knew that was something to be concerned about and when she took him in to get checked out, sure as heack, he had retinoblastoma, in that eye. that was the ONLY picture of the boy with the eye like that. The pic of this boy was not in a dimmly lit setting though.

Since then, a few days ago now that I saw that picture, I vaguly remember seeing a pic of my DS with something similar, thinking, hmm..thats weird. So, being neurotic, and a worried mom, I looked back at ALL of DS's pics on my cameras. There were at least 3 or 4 pics of DS with one eye looking white and the other red, or both eyes kinda looking white, all in dimmly lit settings, which I hear is when most people capture this "tumor of the eye". So of course I started to freak out, thinking my son has this. As I continued looking through the pics, I noticied that there was a pic of my mom with a similar look, where one of her eyes was white and the other red, in a dimmly lit setting, as well as another picture where my eye was like that and a friends eye. I know I probably shouldnt worry, but I googled this disease and seems that most kids are diagnosed before age 3-5 and that most of the time its because so many pictures are taken of children in these growing years that a family member noticies that "white eye". I am going to try and attach a few pics so you can see what I mean and tell me what you think. I dont have a "bad" gut feeling or anything, but just rather be safe than sorry. I figured I would just ask the pedi again when he goes for a visit, to check his eyes carefully and maybe bring the pics with me.?? WWYD.

ETA: I wanna say that its just my crappy camera, since I've seen it in a handful of pictures, not only of my DS but of others too.

Ok below are the many pictures I have found. Trying to compare. Some are from last years, others from the past few months. I hope these links work. Thanks for looking!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are many pictures where someone's eye has been caught "white" or not "red" and looks "odd", much like some of the pictures ive seen online of kids with retinoblastoma. I just dont know what to think because its not JUST my SON whos eye looks like this. While I have many more pics of "him" with the eye like this, there are a few of other people as well. I dont know if its just my crappy camera or what? what do you think. please look carefully at the pics. thanks so much!
ok here are the links. i dont know if it will allow you to see them or if you have to log in first?? let me know if you can see them or not.
just for FYI, I found the pic of the girl's little boy with the eye cancer. His actual "pupil" was white. here is the pic. hope you can see it. it definately looks much different from the ones of my DS's.
Thanks.. this was very interesting.
And yes, the picture of the boy in my opinion was much different than the "glare" that caught your DS eye in the pictures you posted.
Cute family!
:
Most of the pictures, it looks like it's actually glaring off the white of his eye.
That's fascinating though.
I agree, very different things. In the pictures you posted, it's a different angle so the flash is reflecting back. In the little boy's picture, it's very clearly an issue of seeing through the eyeball.
The picture of the little boy looks very much like when you photograph a pet and you get that "pet eye" look instead of red eye. But the ones you posted are more of a reflected flash. In a closer portrait type of pic they are referred to as catch lights and photographers try to get them on purpose.
I had read about this in a post someone made on a message board about a year ago, and coincidentally I had just shot some pictures of my son where I noticed one eye was red, the other white. Just to be safe I called the eye doctor and they made an appointment for me that morning - they were that concerned. They did a very thorough examination and found nothing wrong. I have no regrets for having had him checked out - in the rare case that it is a tumor, it would have been best to know as soon as possible.
Hang on, is it the last three pictures that have you worried?
Looking at what's causing the white in people's eyes picture by picture:
Other child's white of eye.
Your glasses.
Both his eyes reflecting the flash, your eyes red from the flash.
White of his eye, your glasses.
Too far to really see, but definitely white in his left pupil.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...8/P6191074.jpg
Left eye showing white, resolution makes it hard to tell if it's the pupil or the white.
The picture that has you worried, yes? Where he has a bit of the pet eye look to his left eye?
I don't know how I missed that one. Personally, I'd try for a close in face on shot and see what comes up. If things look fine, you might still want to get it checked if it's an easy procedure. If, heaven forfend, you continue to see white in the left pupil, I'd get an appointment first thing monday.
The white is only showing in angled pictures and refractions can do funny things. : that that is what's causing the effect. I think it's likely that in the last picture of him you posted that we're also seeing the flash reflecting off the iris.
Just any of the pictures with his one eye like that. not just the last three. But when I see that its not JUST my DS's eye that is white in some of the pictures, but mine as well as a friends and her DD"s, Im guessing its not an eye tumor in my son. Otherwise we'd all have something right?
I was just curious what you all thought. Im not that worried about it. My gut instinct tells me its nothing. So, I think I will just mention it at his next pedi visit.
thanks ladies!
http://blockboys.blogspot.com/2009/0...by-update.html 3rd picture
I thought I had another one...but I can't find it.
Something about this son's eyes tends to reflect white from time to time. I'm not sure why, but he's been thoroughly checked by an ophthalmologist several times for other reasons, and nothing has ever been found. I've never mentioned the white reflection, but I assume that if there was a tumor, it would have been noticed. He's even had several dilated exams.
I agree, I think you are seeing normal glare, the boy with the confirmed case you can see inside his eye, it's not a reflection like I see in your pics.
Get him checked out if you are concerned. It can't take more than a minute to check can't it?
Those pictures mostly look like they're of too great a distance or angle to really tell anything.
I found this site with instructions for taking pictures that would really show something worrysome. http://www.daisyseyecancerfund.org/r...otography.html
