We Found Our Milk Doe

We were looking for a goat to be my Angora's companion when we moved to a rental where we can have him (currently he is staying at a neighbor's with their goats). So, I was thinking I wanted a milk goat so I could make kefir for myself and the chickens since I want to make my own diet for the chickens and I'm diabetic and can't have straight milk (the kefir eats most of the sugar in the milk). I really wanted a LaMancha since they produce quite a bit of milk and have good cream content in their milk and they are so darn cute. Well, we found her yesterday. She is 2 yrs old and all light brown except for a white stripe down her nose. She is 3 months pregnant and such a sweety. She was bred last year, but kidded in the middle of winter when they were gone and her kids died before they got home because of the cold. So, she kidded fine by herself, which is good so this will be her first time freshening. I'm hoping she will be an easy milker, I will need to handle her a lot before the kids come. I think we are helping this guy out though, seems like his wife is an animal collector and he's trying to sell what he can. It's not stinky and they are well taken care of, but they have way too many animals.

I'm so excited!!!!!! Yay! We're going to have baby goats soon.

I SO love baby goats. Congratulations!

I just answered in your other thread and mentioned my two first fresheners...one of mine actually didn't want to/know how to stand still for her baby, and for the first two days, we had to hold her in place for her kid to latch and nurse. She hated it (and I swear I could tell she hated the feeling of letdown, and I remembers that creepy-tingly feeling, so I was very sympathetic and patient ), but eventually she got the hang of it, and she is now a really quick, easy milker. Almost like turning on a tap.

If you plan on using a milkstand and haven't made it yet, make it and start training her to stand on it. Treats (oats) work.

I make yogurt and feta. I have the culture to make kefir, but have not yet got around to making that. The kids love the yogurt. For me, it's caffe lattes and chai lattes.

Yes, good idea. I have been looking at milking stand plans. I should buy the wood along with all the fencing and stuff next week. I want to try her on sprouted grains so this way I can start her out slow and give them to her while on the milk stand.

Mmmmm.... chai lattes. I miss those. Maybe I can figure out how to make a low sugar one. Maybe with stevia. Hmmmm....
