I thought 17mo DD had the signs of being ready to potty train. She's dry in the morning and after nap, goes long periods without peeing, removes or comes to me with wet diapers, can sign potty, can sit for long periods. The only things are she isn't 18mo and doesn't tell me she has to go, and I figure she has to be taught to tell me.
So I thought we'd give it a try, and for the past week, I've had her naked or in gerber training pants at home. When she goes I sign and say "you went pee pee" and take her to the potty. I put her on the potty throughout the day and we read books. Well, no progress at all yet. She isn't signing pee or potty when or before she goes. We'll spend 10 minutes in the bathroom and she'll hit the hallway and pee. She hasn't gone in the potty once. She used to go first thing in the morning, but now she gets absorbed with her books and doesn't go until she's off playing.
Am I going about it wrong? Is she not ready? Or is a week too short to expect some progress at this age?

DD was out of diapers by 20 months. In fact I still, at 29 months, remind her regularly to go to the potty, and she still has some accidents here and there. It's a long process, especially for the younger ones. I kind of view potty training of younger toddlers as ECing- you could check out the ECing forum for tips.
