are you eating sushi?

sushi is my favourite food. i've gone without it for 4 months now and i'm dying to have some.. i was in the ER the other day (nothing to worry about..) and the doc said that cooked sushi was just fine. so i'm thinking of going out tonight..

is cross-contamination an issue? i mean, i assume the guys that are handling the tempura shrimp for my Dynamite have previously been handling raw fish..

I ate some sushi the other day - mostly cooked tempura yam and tempura shrimp rolls.

But I grabbed a few pieces of my friend's (raw) salmon roll as well, because it looked and smelled divine.

Seriously, it was one of the most delicious meals I've had since I've been pregnant. I hadn't even really been in the mood for sushi when I went to meet my friend, but absolutely demolished my meal and could have eaten more.

Your chances of catching parasites from raw sushi where you live are extremely low. The majority of sushi served in North America has been pre-frozen. You can ask the sushi chefs if any or all of their raw product has been frozen. If you're still worried about that, though, cooked sushi would be fine. I can't imagine what would have to happen for live worms or eggs from parasite infected raw fish to somehow make it into your dynamite roll!

FWIW, I have eaten raw sushi and sashimi through both of my pregnancies when I wanted it.

I have occasionally, I wouldn't be concerned about eating sushi from a place I trust.

I eat sushi in all my pregnancies. I always eat it vegetarian though, because I am one. But if I ate fish, I wouldn't hesitate.

sashimi grade salmon- still frosty! Delicious.

I eat cooked sushi not infrequently while pregnant but it's not my favorite. I love, love, love raw sushi and eat it occasionally at places I trust. I mostly get salmon nigiri or spicy salmon rolls because of mercury contamination with a lot of other fish (like ahi tuna).

Yup, I've had it a few times now. There's this tiny, wonderful little sushi place near my house run by the most amazing family, and the place is so clean I swear you could eat your sushi off the floor! OMG the salmon nigiri is like butter and the rolls were delightful. I had no guilt whatsoever.

I have had it, sometimes I crave it, sometimes it churns my stomach, but yes I do eat it

I haven't eaten sushi since we moved back from Japan, but I ate it there during pregnancy, just like all the other women there do.

I eat it

As PP said, the risk of foodborne illness in sushi is really low at any decent sushi place, due to the freezing of the fish.

I've eaten sushi plenty this pregnancy, just avoiding the high mercury fishes. I basically stick with salmon/crab/shrimp/scallops and avoid the tuna, though I have a nibble of it.

I've been eating sushi, well, when my stomach is up to it anyway. I'm more of a maki roll girl though which gives me many options of cooked fish. I've been having california and dynamite rolls (with tempura shrimp) lately. Another favourite is spicy salmon and volcano rolls (crab with spicy sauce on top of a cali roll) but I spicy stuff hasn't been sitting well during pregnancy so I actually haven't had those in a while.

We stick to one place that we trust the food at, I don't think it's a good time to try the questionable places or anywhere you're not sure about.

I've eaten sushi a ton this pregnancy. I just stick to veggie rolls and never give cross contamination a second thought. Because, lets face it...when someone else is preparing your food, you never really know what is going on anyways.

I live in Vancouver -- how can I not eat sushi?! I do eat the raw stuff, too. However, I avoid tuna.

YES! Now I know what my cravings will be until I eat it again.

I've been eating it, I just keep the raw fish to a minimum, I'm more concerned about mercury than illness!

well, i'm glad i'm not the only one. i went for some cooked rolls (spider, dynamite, spicy shrimp) and it was HEAVEN. totally heaven. i could KISS that doctor who told me to go ahead. i told the staff that i wanted only fully cooked items because i'm pregnant and she said she'd stop me if something was raw. and then i asked about the fish roe, and she checked with the chef.. apparently it was previously frozen, so that was good enough for me! it wasn't the very best sushi i ever had (i usually like raw salmon for example) but man.. it was heaven.

i'm not brave enough to try the raw fish but i also didn't think to ask the chef if it was previously frozen. i suspect it would have been, considering i'm on the canadian prairies and we really don't have any salmon around here

I've had (cooked) sushi several times already. I won't eat the raw rolls until after the baby, but those are a surprisingly small percentage of the menu in my favorite restaurant.
