are you eating sushi? - Page 2

Im a sushi lover...and still eating it.

DP and I used to go out at LEAST once or twice a month for sushi. I've cut back a bit while pregnant, though. Im 23 weeks tomorrow and have had sushi about 3-4 times during pregnancy. It really doesnt worry me, as I avoid fish high in mercury (we primarily have tuna and salmon) and am sure to ONLY go to the one place that I've been going to for years now.

Excellent item in the NY Times on this:

Note that tuna is said to contain high mercury levels (and is threatened - I even know a Japanese place that won't serve tuna for that reason!), so you want to take it easy on that.

That being said, I myself err on the side of caution with most of these things, just to preserve my peace of (fragile) mind.

I won't eat sushi... but I agree with the pp's. Anything in moderation seems to be fine. I still eat salmon and tuna and crab.

I eat it, raw and cooked, all the time, and have for 3 pregnancies (was afraid with the first.)

I still eat sushi, but tend a little more toward the cooked ingredients AND I avoid tuna (heavy metals). Still, I do eat raw fish from my favorite restaurants.

The only places I won't eat sushi (unless it's all veggie) is from the prepared areas at my favorite grocery stores. Anything that's been sitting around for any period of time seems a little gross to me now...and don't even get me started on Trader Joe's "sushi"...one time I was shopping there and a full-grown FLY was buzzing around inside a closed container of spicy shrimp rolls. Bleeeehhhhhh......

The issue with sushi is the mercury content (which messes with brain development). So if you're going to eat it, here's the APA's list of what you should definitely avoid:

Quote:
Highest mercury
AVOID
Kajiki (swordfish)
Saba (mackerel)
Shark
Tilefish

High Mercury
Eat no more than three 6-oz servings a month

Ahi (yellowfin tuna)
Buri (adult yellowtail)
Hamachi (young yellowtail)
Inada (very young yellowtail)
Kanpachi (very young yellowtail)
Katsuo (bonito)
Maguro (bigeye, bluefin or yellowfin tuna)
Makjiki (blue marlin)
Masu (trout)
Meji (young bigeye, bluefin* or yellowfin tuna)
Shiro (albacore tuna)
Toro (bigeye, bluefin or yellowfin tuna)

I eat it at least once a week and did with my last pregnancy as well. I keep thinking I'm going to get looks from people while I pile it on my plate but that's never happened lol. I prefer veg or cooked but also eat it w/ raw.

thanks for the list! i usually have tuna, but haven't at all since i got pg. i don't eat any of the others regardless i was more worried about the raw aspect..

so we did go out for sushi, and it was HEAVENLY. i want to do it again, soon!

I do. However i have my own set of rules- only from reputable nice places, never ever from somewhere ive never eaten. Also, I try to balance out cooked with raw, and order cut rolls rather than say sashimi- that way the rice helps to fill me up and I dont end up with as much raw fish. And I do tuna very rarely since it has the most mercury and instead go for salmon.

I had sushi for lunch today!! It was soooo goood but I had been avoiding raw stuff for a while, but now all this talk of spicy salmon rolls, mmmmm!! I might have to have it again soon!!

I had california rolls last night and a shrimp appetizer with cream cheese deep fried in wonton wrap and I had the time of my life eating it. Reading this I want some more...BAD.

California rolls--and lot's of them!!
It's cooked fake crab meat so I'm not worried.

okay, this thread really has to work its way down the line...EVERY TIME I see it, I'm craving sushi. That's fine, because I'll eat it, but my wallet can't stand another week of this thread on the front page!
