Early u/s question....

I have never had anything but the standard 20 wk u/s with my other kids, but I am having one tomorrow at 7 weeks to rule out multiples. How do these ealry ones differ form the later? If it is external like the 20wk my kids wil lcome, but if it is internal, i'll have them stay with gma while i go in. NAy info is appreciated!

I'm going to say it will be vaginal.
I've had a few earlier ones and they have all been that way.
You'll lay on the table with your legs up (think stirrups) and usually the tech gives you the wand to insert yourself although she will then guide it to where it needs to be.
It's definately a little awkward. If your kids are sitting behind you, they won't see anything, although I personally would not bring my kids (or anyone but my dh) to an early u/s like that.

It all depends on the machine and the tech, but Ive never had my legs up... just one... and always had a sheet over my lower half so even if my kids were in the room they would not know what was going on.

I had one at just before 9 weeks this time though and that was abdominal, not vaginal.

You wont see much at 7 weeks... baby looks like a bug pretty much. See a heartbeat... but that is pretty much it, definitely will not be as detailed as later ultrasounds.

Great question, i will be 7 week tomorrow and i want to have a early US to rule out multiples too. But we live in Mexico and i'm wondering do I need to request a vaginal US or abdominal one.
Here in MX i can walk into a ultrasound place and request one on my own...with out a doctors note. So i need to know what to ask for.

Hmm... you bring up a good point. Can OP request an abdominal us?

I really have no good advice, and while I am aware that there are these two different types of us options I have only ever heard of people I know getting the vaginal for the intial. I wish you the very best, and have fun seeing your LO/LO's for the first time.

Thanks for the info, i figured it woulf be vaginal, and I'd honestly rather avoid all the questions from the kids at this point, the 20 week will be more fun for them anyway. Off to call gma since DH will be at work when I have my appt....

Just a quick note: my 7 week u/s was abdominal and we could see all we could have seen at that stage (not much, but the heartbeat was confirmed). So I bet you can ask for it, if it doesn't already get offered to you.
