A big book of art? (Basically a coffee table book)

It hit me today, when I was thinking about art "curriculum" for the year, that I would love to have a big book of famous art and artists. Just a great reference to look at whenever we are talking about a famous artist and their work. I was thinking this could be a really wonderful resource to have throughout their education.

Can anyone recommend? For something special, I would really not mind spending more on this. I just think it would be really a wonderful book to have around all the time, to help my kids and I be exposed more and have a place to look whenever.

We have a great one from Sister Wendy.

Ours is softcover. I think we got in from the Paperback Book of the Month Club, so I don't imagine it was that expensive.

Funny you asked for a big book of art because that's exactly what this one is called and just what you are looking for (I think)

We are both art teachers and I think this might be perfect.

If you are looking for the classic intro to Art History book I'd look at the one by Jansen, it's a classic. They make junior one too, at least they did in the eighties. They cover pre-history to current.

I recall that Homeschool Education Monthly Magazine had an article sometime within the last few years all about art appreciation. I can't recall if they suggested a specific book, but I do recall the author had some great suggestions on how to use art print books like coffee table books to start conversation and interest in art.

we've scored a couple really inexpensive at the thrift store.

Sister Wendy is great.

We use my old college art or art history textbooks, and I was surprised at how much dd really liked them. We don't read through the college texts but just flip through and talk about the pictures.

You could hit up your local college bookstore and flip through and see what you like, though the books can usually be found cheaper online (amazon).
