I have a 4 year old dd and a 5 year old ds. My ds was sensitive to wheat, soy, dairy, and oatmeal as a baby, but he outgrew those sensitivities a long time ago (probably by the time he was 2).
Anyway, both my kids have had completely unexpected possible allergic reactions to foods recently, and I am hoping you can help me narrow things down so I can get an idea what I might need to avoid. I am not sure yet whether we should see a doctor to test for allergies.
By this point my kids eat a huge variety of foods (including occassionally items at church that have lots of dyes and various types of additives), and they have never had a problem with anything. So let me describe what happened:
Incident 1: 4 year old dd and grapes
My kids eat grapes on a regular enough basis that I know they've never had any problem with them. A week ago, however, I accidently purchased a type of grape we don't normally purchase. They looked like normal grapes, albeit a bit small, but they had seeds and they were extremely sour. ds and dd still peeled and ate a whole bunch (and even dw and I had a few). Very soon, dd was scratching uncontrollably at her lips and her hands and complaining of an itchy tingly feeling. There was no swelling, just discomfort, so I got out the benedryl and had the car keys ready to go just in case, and then just let her soak her hands in an oatmeal bath, shortly after which she said the discomfort was gone.
Incident 2: 5 year old ds and a push-pop
My kids have periodically purchased ice cream including push-pops at the corner store with quarters they collect. It is not very often...probably two or three times a year for the last year or two, but there has never been a problem (and I have to check, but I even think Jolly Rancher might be the brand). Now, one problem is that I can't recall if my dd has been the one to purchase the push-pops, or if ds has ever purchased one. But here is the deal. Today they were with their auntie at the beach and her teenagers were eating push-pops from the ice cream truck, so she bought one for each of my kids off the ice cream truck. They were Jolly Rancher push-pops. She said they were a 3-in-1 flavor including watermelon, cherry, and sour apple. I don't know whether my ds ate the whole thing, but my SIL said that his lips swelled up like a balloon. She walked him immediately to the pharmacy down the street, which only had Claritin. He was breathing fine and speaking normally, just looked very swollen, so she kept the Claritin on hand and has just been keeping an eye on it. She said it is still swollen, but that it seems to have come down.
What could this be?
