Everyone gets a freebie Panicked Post, right? I don't usually panic or get stressed about what a pregnant woman can or can't do, but after talking back to my extremely laid-back husband and the extremely laid-back guy at poison control, I'm freaking out a little bit. DH changed our kitchen lights yesterday and when he finished, it was way too late to take them to the facility that accepts florescent bulbs. He's at work now. He tried to put them somewhere safe but one of my kids somehow knocked one over - I didn't see it happen, I was putting the baby down for a nap when he did it - and it broke all over the kitchen. Literally. The shards of glass go from one side of the room to another and there is powder all over the place. Florescent bulbs contain mercury so I started looking up how you go about cleaning them safely and was getting a lot of warnings for pregnant women, which is what prompted me to call poison control. The guy there said I should get someone else to clean it up. DH asked if I could block off the room until he gets home but if I do, I'm either sequestered downstairs with my older kids, or sequestered up here with the baby. The stairway begins in the kitchen. DH told me you're not supposed to use a broom to sweep it up because it will contaminate the broom, so you're supposed to scoop it up with a piece of stiff cardboard then get the rest with duct tape. I can barely lean over to put my shoes on at this point, much less scoot around on a glass-infested kitchen floor to scoop up mercury powder. Sigh. DH is trying to get out of work or see if he can find someone willing to come over and clean it up for me.
Of course my primary worry is breathing in fumes (not just me, but the kids).
My secondary concern is: If my kitchen is out of commission, does that mean we get to go out to eat tonight?
