Is a scale good to have for elementary math?

We are doing level 2 of Singapore right now and we arrived at weight. It said to find something you think is 1 kg and weigh it. I figured no problem, our electronic scale can handle that. Nope, lol! Too light.

So I'm wondering - is this something we should have and will it be useful throughout the years? If yes, what type? There are several different kinds and I'd like to get one that will be the most useful. Would love any advice, and if you have a recommendation for where to buy, that would be great also.

Thanks!

There have been many instances that I wished we had a scale for hs. Not just math, but science too. So, I can't offer you advice on type, but I am thinking of finally buying one too. Would love to hear what other people use. Currently, I use my food scale a lot. It only does ounces/pounds up to nine pounds (metric too). I am wondering if I would like one to measure smaller weights than that.

I have a Salter food scale I got off Amazon a few years ago. Weighs in pounds/ounces or grams, up to 11lbs. Used it for produce mostly that first year, sometimes use it for baking and other random stuff (like tile grout powder, compliments of hubby). Just don't let the kids roughhouse around near it. Sigh. If we need to weigh/measure stuff for science in the future, odds are I'll pull it out of it's safe drawer as need be.

I also have a balance scale I got from Rainbow Resource (it was $11.something). If you had the little brass weights I bet kiddos could go nuts with that to some degree as well.

I also use a kitchen scale for science. We haven't reached the learning-about-weight stage of math, yet, but I'm sure we'll use the kitchen scale for that as well.

this one seems pretty good, for only $25.
