back labor

Another on back labor -

I had it for 24 hours with a baby I THOUGHT was posterior. The OB who eventually did the c/s told me he was posterior. Then I got the hospital report, which said he was ANTERIOR!!!

So, what possibly could have caused that kind of labor? Of course, the report could be wrong. Also, my waters did not break naturally. The m/w broke them at 8 or 9.

When we were at pushing stage, cx were about 6 minutes apart.

A friend of mine had excruciating back labor with a perfectly positioned baby, which actually got worse until the placenta came. Her mw theorized that ther placenta had implanted over a nerve bundle and that's what caused the pain. Perhaps that could have been the case for you as well? Just an idea...

I had back labor with a baby that was not posterior. My water broke spontaneously at home about 30 minutes after contractions started.

But when I have my period, I ALWAYS feel it in my back, every time, and up and down my thighs (also had that in labor). In fact, the back aches during my period are just as bad as the regular cramps.

I just think that's how my body works.

Any chance the baby turned toward the end of your labor? Then you'd have back labor but an anterior birth... but I know so little about birth so that's just a crazy theory of mine.

one told me DS was posterior but DH said he was born face up so I guess he was (I had 40+ hours of back labor -- with augmentation, I'm sure it would've been longer with no interventions). I have no idea what the reports said, I never read them, but I read DS's post-birth reports and there were definitely errors there so I wouldn't be surprised if they just wrote it down wrong for you.

I think anything is possible. I had a posterior baby with no back labor. His face was cut during the c-section, so I am sure he was posterior. It's possible that he was not posterior and that the OB made a mistake when determining position. It's probably equally possible that the report is wrong. They often are.

Wow!!! I had never considered that this could've been the cause of my back labor, also with a perfectly positioned baby. I just thought I had something terribly wrong with my back! If that is possible, then it's also possible for a second birth to be different!!!

Another one here with well positioned babies and back labor. Both of my kids were anterior and the back labor was almost unbearable. I did not feel one single contraction in my front because the pain in my back was so intense. My period is the same. Never cramps, only back ache.

Ds was anterior but my labour was almost exclusively back labour. Posterior is just more likely to cause back labour.
