I justify the expense because we don't have a landline and I just really enjoy the convenience of the iPhone.
Data plans changed when the iPhones changed to 3G, but that is only $10 per phone. BTW, you (anyone of us) can lower your data plan a bit by leaving unlimited behind. Most people don't need unlimited.

The plan we have is not listed anywhere. We signed up with whatever was the lowest/standard plan when we got the iPhones. When we received the first bill, I hyperventilated. (I knew the new monthly amount and was okay with that, but they had nearly two complete months on one bill due to timing and that was just SHOCKINGLY HIGH!!!!!!) Anyway, I called up immediately and let them calm me down with a lower-than-advertised plan.

That is usually true about data plans, however I DO NOT recommend changing from the unlimited data plan with iPhones because you won't be able to get it back and it is a pita to have to worry about your data useage much more so than minutes or texts...

I use a tracfone it's prepaid & I only use it if I'm out & need to meet up or connect with DH at work. It sounds like you'd be able to make out better with one. I got free double minutes for life when I purchased the phone, so it is a real
bargain!

Too much!!! We both have smart phones and therefore the data plans that come with them... I think our total bill is ~$160/month. That also includes a text plan and insurance.

We were paying 80 bucks a month for a family plan plus one line, so two cell phones at Verizon.

I switched to a bare bones verizon plan for $25, and added $5 for 250 texts a month. I rarely talk on the phone. I do use texts sometimes, like to ask DH to get something while he is at the store after he already left, ect.

DH switched to a Tracphone, and just charges it with minutes when he needs to. a text message counts as half a minute. I think it runs about 10 bucks a month. He really didn't want a cell phone at all, but we live in the country, his car is starting to get unreliable, and we live somewhere that gets -10 and blizzardy. So a cell is needed I think in case you get stranded.

We have no landline, but did get a Magic Jack, so we can make as many calls as we want from home for 25 bucks a year.
