For this to happen at a zoo where breastfeeding happens all the time...I don't even have the words.

We have created a Facebook group to spread information about this--please join us! The group is titled "Brookfield Zoo Nursing Protest."

(Mods--hope it's ok to post this.)

I'm not on facebook. Could you tell us what, when, where, etc?

P.S. It always bothered me that Brookfield does a milking exhibit on the goats, but throws out the milk and does not give it to the kids (baby goats)(They said it wasn't clean when I asked). And, they give the kids formula from the start (It's healthier! And, you never really know how much the kid is getting, so we just give the kid formula so we know they'll grow well!!!!! That is what I was told.) But, that's another post....

The when and where are in the link above, but I believe this happened just yesterday at the cafe in the zoo.

Thanks. I read the link.

I was also interested in stealthmode's comment on "Brookfield Zoo Nursing Protest"

I see the article was posted yesterday and the writer comments the incident happened "this last week."

I wonder when the nursing protest is planned for.

Hi, sorry, I know not everyone's on Facebook...Brookfield Zoo has issued an apology to the author of the original article. She writes about it here:

http://www.triblocal.com/detail.html?sub_id=210933

However, I spoke with someone in upper management of the foods department this morning and he told me that he knew of no policies or training regarding nursing mothers. Plus, both he and another person in upper management (who was reached by another mama) made comments wondering about whether or not the mother was using a nursing cover. That, to me, says that Brookfield and its employees are still missing the point!

We may be planning a nurse-in in the near future. I will report back to let everyone know.

lollerskates from the article's comments:

time to de-sexualize this. if nursing in public is a sexual act, then bottle feeding must be the equivalent of whipping out a dildo.

That's exactly what I thought only from reading the thread's title!

Hmm, call me crazy but I it sounds to me like the Zoo's management is trying like crazy to stave off a lawsuit here. The law here in Illinois is unequivocal, interefere with a woman's right to breastfeed and she has the private right of action to sue you for it. Full stop.

Apparently the mom in question feels sufficiently placated but I have to say it still makes me nervous about testing the waters when it comes to breastfeeding at the Brookfield Zoo. I think it would behoove their management to work harder with a PR campaign reinforcing their message that they understand and respect for the law as it currently stands.

Just my $.02
