Slow supply! Barley water?

Hey all...

I was just wondering if anyone has had any positive experience with barley water to increase their milk supply?

Like many bfing mama's here, I've had supply problems since my son was about 3 months old. Before that I had more than enough. Going back to work I used the pump more than I was actually nursing which I think may have contributed to the problem as well as cutting out dairy when he was colicky (he isn't anymore so I've resumed eating it)- i think I just wasn't eating enough fats and drinking enough water.

I've tried fenugreek capsules- I was taking 3 capsules 3x daily (9 total), as well as Nursing Tea and a homeade, fresh, organic herbal tea from an herbalist friend of mine (it included fenugreek seed, fennel seed, raspberry leaf, and I think something else). She also gave me a big bottle of organic fennel seeds for the barley water. She said to boil 1/2 cup of barley in 3 cups water until cooked, strain and pour 1 cup boiling barley water over 1 tsp fennel seed and steep for 20 minutes, then drink...several times a day. It seems hard to plan out to do this enough as I also work so I'm not always home to do this.

My son is almost 5 months old now and I have had to supplement in addition to bm. It seems that the onlt time I have a big enough supply is when I'm off from work for a few days at a time so I can sleep, rest, and have more time for nursing. Unfortunately I can't afford not to work! Any suggestions? I asked a few mama friends about this and one of them recommended I got straight here to you all and post this! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Or even just your own personal experiences with supply issues like this? Need support! Please and thank you!

Sounds like things improve when you get enough stimulation (via your DS nursing). It might be your pump. I'd check your pump. Are your cones the right size? If everything is fine with your pump then I'd check into renting a hospital grade pump for a few months. They're much better for boosting a low supply than regular electric pumps.

Hmm...I'm not sure. I have a Medela Pump In-Style...I used the flanges that camee with it but they seem to work fine. I used the pump a lot the first couple of weeks to get my milk to come in strong and because we had trouble latching. I brought my pump to a visit to a lactation consultant and they didn't say anything about needing different size. I've heard from a lot of people that pumping and actually nursing yeilds much different results. i have definitly noticed that. Most of the information I've found of this website relay that my supply is probably fine and perhaps my son is fussy for another reason. There are times he'll nurse for literally less than 60 seconds and I've already felt the letdown but there's nothing left in there! Its so heartbreaking to know that I can't exclusively nourish him as nature intended.
