something to help him sleep

I was in the opinion I wouldn't drug my child to help them sleep due to travel.... well that was before my husband got a job thats 100% international travel. And we move every couple months. The time zones are usually 8-12 hrs difference.... and the flights are WAY longer (we are good about flying at night with a long layover in between and he has done PERFECT except one flight) but its kind of tough on our 1yr old to adjust to that first week. Not everyone is going to agree with the way we live and I since I hear enough negative stuff from my family I would appreciate no comments on who we shouldn't be doing that (sorry if that sounds mean, I JUST got an ear full so I'm a little on edge about it). Anyway....
Since the flights are easily 8 plus hours plus the week of jet-lag, I'm needing something to help him sleep to get him back on track. (this would also be nice on those bad teething nights). I don't want to use Benadryl, but I was hoping you all my know a more natural/safer option. Thanks in advance!

Some people use melatonin supplements to encourage the body clock in the right direction.

We use melatonin for our two year old (per neurologist). If you do decide to use it, which I really wouldn't because it isn't perfectly safe, you can use wayyyyyyyy less than most doctors suggest and it will still probably work. Our neuro told us to try 1/2 mg, and we are using 1/10th to 1/20th totally successfully. You have to buy it in liquid form to get it that small.

*sigh* Where have you read that it is not safe? I'd like to read this information if you have it.

We use benadryl, but our doctor gave us the guidelines for use as a pediatric sedative, then I reduce the dose slightly. With two parents with anxiety disorders, sometimes my child needs a sedative.

Aside from benadryl, we also use Valerian Drops by Herbs for Kids. It is expensive, but a little goes a long way, and we're still using the same bottle six months later. Our FP also supports us using this method to help our child wind down and go to sleep.

Our son is over two years old and over 25lbs, too. Make sure you check with your child's doctor before trying anything.

For the ones that are liquids.... do I have to keep them in the fridge?

Just a note on the Benadryl - it makes some kids hyper, so if you are going to use it, try it before you are on a plane. I gave it to my DD when I thought she was having an allergic reaction, and she was up all. night. long.

*sigh* google it. There is plenty of info everywhere. It is safe enough that I choose to use it with my child, but it is not without risks.
