172 tons of deli meat recalled due to Listeria contamination

Article says the meat (made by Tyson) all of it was sold to Wal-Mart stores, and some of the meat was used to make “Marketside Grab and Go” deli sandwiches. Guess it is justified to be leery of deli meats during pregnancy.

And let's not even get started on eggs... :-)

Eek! Glad I haven't eaten any of that.

The article does say "may be" and it is a precaution (which I am glad) but no one got sick yet. At least not reported. And it wasn't deli meat package, it was a pre-made sandwich. "None of the meat was sold in individual packages or separately at the deli counter" Thankfully my mom always taught me never to eat anything that wasn't made fresh, so I have always been leery of those things anyway!

apparently I need to pay more attention when scanning an article! Still wish they had been more specific on the types of meats...

If it wasnt on a premade sandwich, you are fine.

They said specifically it was meat sent to WalMart to use in premade sandwiches, had use by date of august 20-september 10th

the article gives you all of that information.

pre-made sandwiches? NO ONE should be eating those, much less pregnant people. :bleh I mean really...we're growing little humans!

The only cold-cuts/deli meat I will eat, pregnant or not, is Boarshead and I need to see it cut in front of me.

Pre-packaged deli meat/pre-packaged sandwiches gross me out.

Our local news reported that the Meats that could be contaminated were black forest ham, Hard salami, roast beef, And Virginia ham.

Unfortunately even that is not a given. Borsehead is made right next to some very diferrent brands/qualities of meat.

172 tons of meat! Clearly, we've gone off the deep end in how we 'produce' food, with thanks to Tyson and Walmart (and many others like him). I am looking at the 'don't eat deli meat when you're pregnant because of listeria risk' (and some other warnings) completely differently now: this is not about deli meat per se any more! I will reconsider my decision and contemplate eating deli meat again from my local butcher from local cows, cut right in front of me.
