We keep ours in the basement. That is the only place that we had the room for it.

Ours is by the basement door and will be in the basement as soon as dh can install the cat door.

Laundry room which is right by the kitchen. I am not happy with the location but we don't have another place to keep one.

DH built a wooden box in the garage with a hinged lid, insulated it and sealed it with primer. This is right up against the wall between the garage and the basement family room, and he cut a cat door-sized hole in it and framed it. The cats can access the boxes through the hole, they are out of sight and out of reach of babies/toddlers, and easy to change - we just go into the garage, open the hinged lid and then scoop or change the boxes. If the family room door is shut (when guests come over, since it's usually disaster), there is a cat hole in the family room door so the cats can always get in. We've done this in the previous two houses we've owned also and it works great for us, though I know it wouldn't work for everyone. We have 5 cats, have had as many as 7.

We also have one litter box in the laundry room for the kitty who lives in there, she doesn't get along with our other cats. I hate that one, dealing with the litter everywhere.

The absolute only place for ours was in our bathroom and I HATE it.

Ours is in a corner at the doorway between the dining room and living room. I don't like having it there, but I have an elderly kitty who has trouble with stairs because of arthritis, so putting it upstairs or down in the basement is out. It won't fit in the bathroom.

The upside to having it in such a conspicuous place is that it cannot be ignored and gets cleaned a LOT.

Our litterbox is right by the front door (we have a large front door area) because it is really the only place for it. Our bathroom is too small to keep it there, I don't want it in the kitchen for obvious reasons, and the rest of our apartment is covered in wall to wall carpet. It's much easier to clean the cat litter/sweep up on hard floors.

Most of the time I don't mind it because it's the area of our apartment we spend the least time (we obviously aren't lounging around our front door), but it does bother me when we have guests come in and it's the first thing they see. It's not such a big deal though, we keep the litter very clean and all of the guests we would normally have over all have cats too.

We've had ours in various places in the various apartments and houses we've had.

We had it in a little nook in the kitchen one time, that was not ideal because, well, it's the kitchen!

We had it in a big utility closet at the next apartment. That worked well, except it meant the door always had to be cracked.

At our next apartment it was in an extra bathroom that we rarely used, and we had it under the sink. We took the cabinet doors off and put it under there. Didn't look the best, but at least it wasn't out in the open.

At our townhouse we had it in my bathroom in the linen closet (which we did not use for linens, because we didn't want cat pee smell in our towels!). I really really hated this. I hated getting out of the shower and stepping in litter!

At our house now it's in the half bath in the basement. We installed a cat door (though those cat holes the pp mentioned are so cute!) in the door to the basement so we can keep that door closed (we have a DD who is going to be mobile eventually and I didn't want a door to the stairs open!). It works well.

In one apartment we had it in the kitchen, in another apartment we had it in the master bedroom closet, in a basement apartment we actually had it in the hallway(which sucked, but what else are you going to do?), we had it in the utility room of one house, we had it in the unfinished basement of another house...... I think that's it.

Kitchen utility closet with a kitty door cut into the door. Baby proof and private for my one weirdly modest cat.

in the laundry room. we used to have cabinets in the laundry room and had cut a hole in the side of the cabinet and kept it under there out of sight and was great.

I cleared out our hall closet, hanging coats on a rack and putting shoes in shoe bins on the wall, and gave that space over to the kitty. I put a cat door in the bathroom (it shares a wall with the closet) so you can't see anything from the hall.

In the laundry room. The door has a cutout for the kitties to go through so it's separate from everyone and no guests ever have to see it.

That cat hole looks awesome! If we owned, I would definitely put one in our basement door.

We're getting a cat on Thurs & the litterbox is a HUGE issue since we have a toddler. I would put it in the basement, but that would mean leaving the door open. & ds3 is good with stairs but those are bad ones & I hate him going down them, plus that doesn't really keep him out of it. I think our only option is to clear out the front hall closet (since it's kind of small) & mostly close the door to keep ds3 out.

I'm afraid I've never forgotten the story of a kid I babysat who got into the cat litter & ate it when he was a toddler.

This is what I WANTED to do but DH didn't want the litter box in "his" garage.

We have ours in a laundry room cupboard. I took the doors off and covered the cabinet with 2 small curtains that I attached with velcro.

My friend had this problem. They put a chain latch at the top of the basement door so that it would only open wide enough for the kitty to go downstairs.
