When to size-up adjustable diapers?

My ds is 5 weeks old, and I'm a little confused about the sizing on our diapers. We use the Thirsties Duo Pockets in size 1, which are supposed to fit until he is about 9 months old and 18 lbs.

Around 2 weeks old, we started getting leaks and the diapers looked small, so we sized up. The leaks stopped and the diapers seemed to fit just fine. Three days ago the diapers started leaking again (they weren't full), so we sized-up and the they stopped leaking. So now my 5 week old is on the largest size of the diapers that are supposed to last until he is about 9 months old. He isn't large... he weighs under 9 pounds and the 0-3 month sized clothes are still big on him.

Does that sound right to you? Did we size-up too early? If we did, what else would be causing the leaks that went away when we did size-up? Any other thoughts on what is going on? I read online reviews, and no one else seems to have problems with their newborn outgrowing these.

I am so frustrated that we might have spent all this money on less than 2 months worth of diapers that were supposed last until close to 9 months!

I also found I needed to go to the largest rise setting quite early (I'm using the duo-wraps, not the pockets), but I've found they fit at that size for longer than I anticipated. At about 14lbs and 4.5mos, dd can still wear it with an infant prefold, although it's a struggle to get a regular prefold in there. It won't fit till 18lbs, but it will fit till 15, I'm guessing.

Yeah, DS was out of the size 1 Duos quite early - more like 14lbs I think. Any child with a longer rise is going to move out of them early.

That said, I never had leaks with a diaper on the smaller size - just couldn't do it up properly. I could see it happening though.

Thing is, we have a size 2 Duo, and it's pretty huge on him - he's about 18lbs now I think. And it's bulky on the lowest setting. It seems like there's a gap between sizes.

I agree with the previous posters. My DD was in duo wraps, size 1, until about 14-15 lbs. She was in a yellow edge infant prefold then. NO WAY I could get her red edge prefold in her size 1's.

Perdita- interesting about the gap in sizing. I just put in orders for new diapers and covers, and decided against size 2 duo-wraps. They are really nice for a trim fit, but not roomy enough for a diaper with enough absorbancy for my heavy-wetter.
