What does it look like when they are first starting to think about it? Lately every time i put her down she instantly rolls onto her belly and does baby push ups and sometimes tries to pull her knees into her belly and then gets really frustrated and starts fussing. The thing is she doesn't even really roll from belly to back yet! I've seen her do it a few times but she learned the other way around first and she doesn't sit up unassisted at all or even have an interests in sitting on her bum. She either wants to stand or lay on her belly and fuss. Soo...is it possible she is already trying to crawl even though she isn't sitting down unassisted yet? I always read they sit unassisted and THEN crawl. She just turns 6 months.

I think it just depends on the baby; DS was sitting well on his own for 2 months or so before he crawled, and he doesn't cross crawl. He has one knee tucked under him and pushes off with the opposite foot, but moves his hands in the typical cross crawl fashion.
He did what your DD is doing now for quite a while. He started crawling by being in a sitting position and lunging forward to reach things. Alot of babies start crawling this way, which is why sitting comes first for them, I think. But there is no hard and fast rule about which comes first or when, or how they start crawling.

My girl is 6 months. For a few weeks she has been mobile but not crawling. She pulls herself along with her arms and digs her toes into the floor. She can sit for a few minutes but is more interested in moving. She also gets on her hands and knees and sometimes on her hands and toes.
My son learned to commando crawl and sit up in the same week. I've always wanted to have that 'sit on a blanket and play with toys stage' but my babies aren't made that way.

Mine doesn't crawl yet, but it's obvious she's trying to figure it out. I have a great video of it too that I'll share if I get it up soon. But she's up on hands, knees, feet, legs, contorting her body every which way, fussing, getting frustrated, doing face plants, ANYTHING to figure out how to go forward.
If it means anything mine has been sitting unassisted for the last 3-4 weeks. Now enough so that I am confident to leave for a minute or two and know she probably won't fall over.

I think it depends on the baby, too. My DD would get on her hands and knees and kind of rock back and forth. Or sometimes she'd put her knees up under her w/ her butt in the air, with her face in the floor trying to forge forward, LOL. She did this for a couple of weeks before she finally started crying (right at 6 months).
