who has tried using Encare, a spermicidal sepository with noxinol 9, with diaphram? Do you put it in before or after diaphram? Can you smear it around the rim of the diaphram, then insert the rest after the diaphram? Does it really burn?

I tried using it as a back up for condoms. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Yes, it burns. It burns a lot. I'd rather go a lifetime without intercourse than use Encare ever again. I don't think I'm particularly sensitive to the nonoxynol-9 since I've been using VCF (the films, not the foam) for a few months with only occasional very minor irritation.
I'm not sure how well Encare would work to smear since it is solid and somewhat crumbly until it is inserted and the baking soda in it reacts with the acids in the vaginal environment and it gets ridiculously fizzy.
Is there any particular reason you are considering Encare instead of a spermicidal gel? It seems like that would be much easier to use effectively with a diaphragm.
