Enlarged brain ventricles? My u/s this am :( Update 8/27

Update 8/27 - Our perinatologist appt is scheduled for September 8th at 2:40pm ... that is less than 2 weeks away, but it sure seems like a long time to wait for answers! It's going to give me plenty of time to practice hypnobabies fear release. Just wanted to let everyone know, thanks for all of your support and info!!

Well guys, I don't know if my u/s this am ended up being a good or bad thing.

It was for a growth check, which is just fine. He's growing great, actually measures large and weight was estimated at 6lb 7oz (we all know how that goes though) and we got a really cute 4d picture of his chubby cheeks.

Then the dr. comes in and tells me that his brain ventricles are a little "prominent" he says they are not what he would call large but are bigger than normal and would feel better if we had a detailed u/s done with a specialist just to be on the safe side.

Of course he says not to worry, they are not very large, you can see the brain all around it, they were not enlarged at all at our 20 week anatomy scan ... blah blah ... I'm worried.

So now we wait for the specialist at the university hospital to give us an appointment. And until then, I can't help but be worried. Dr. Google wasn't very helpful either, at least not in easing my fears.

Does anyone know anything about this? Prayers and positive vibes appreciated.

I have no experience with this but I hope you get your specialist appointment soon so that the wait won't go on and on. I'm sure everything will be okay and that this is just a precaution. My thoughts are with you!! s

It sounds like it's not a big deal but I know you must be feeling so nervous (I would be too!). I hope you can get into that appt ASAP to put your mind at ease.

Prayers for you and your little guy. I hope the specialist can get you in soon, it's hard to know exactly what it means until they get a more detailed look at what's going on.

Sometimes at later u/s they have a harder time seeing things. We had one (for the first time) with my last pg around 30 weeks. They thought they saw a problem with her heart. It was a very, very long two weeks to see a specialist. When they did the higher level u/s, she was fine. Totally fine. Of course, they insisted I was still high-risk and wanted to do weekly NSTs and u/s. And maybe induce.

But, take heart. They probably just couldn't see very well, and everything is just fine!

Oh mama, I know this feeling all too well

Send lots of love to your baby and while you're relaxing practising your hypnobabies, try to envision your baby with a perfect healthy brain, or say positive affirmations like "my baby is perfect, healthy and strong". It certainly helped me and still does.

Big hugs, mama. Keep us posted!

I was told the same thing at my 20 week ultrasound with my 1st DD - it was a very difficult wait for my level 2 U/S! When the perinatologist came in to see me he saw nothing to be concerned about and said that generally the higher resolution U/S makes things look more clear and usually everything is just fine!

Hoping you have the same results as I did!

Thank you everyone for the support, and esp your stories about how everything turned out ok.

My gut feeling is that he's just fine, but I'm not going to be able to relax until the perinatologist tells me that.

Melly, you were one of the first people I thought of when all of this happened.

One thing I can say - thank goodness for hynobabies. Did a session when I got home today and felt so much better and more centered.

I will for sure keep everyone posted - I should know by Friday when we go to the specialist.

I'm so sorry for your worry. Docs are trained to be over-the-top cautious and make sure they check everything. It sounds like they're not really expecting to find a problem, but just want to make sure they don't miss that less than 1% chance there's something wrong... but I think the worry things like this cause should be considered, too.

I'm so glad you have hypnobabies to help you relax. Sending lots of healthy baby vibes your way.

Was there a particular reason/concern that you needed to do a growth check u/s?

I had gastric bypass surgery 7 years ago so growth can be an issue due to lack of nutrients and absorption issues. That's why we checked, but he's doing just great growing.

Oh that's right... sorry for not matching your username with the situation... I remember your post about the u/s now. I'm glad he's growing well.

Dang, sorry you have to wait so long! It can be hard to get in with specialists. We'll be praying for you and your little guy!
