What can we plant right now?

Our back yard planting bed needs a little TLC. We currently have various bushes, a crape myrtle, a small japanese maple and some zinnia's that will get pulled up in a month. We'd like to be able to plant some flowering bushes - like azalea's or maybe some tall plants like cannas against the house.
What are some other flowering shrubs, bushes or plants that we would be able to plant right now?? The bed that will be planting in gets 4 to 6 hours of sun everyday.

Where do you live? or what zone are you in? In my zone, which is 5, we can only plant cannas in the spring because they will not survive winter.

In probably most regions of the USA, it is a fine time to be planting shrubs, but maybe not if you live somewhere like South Texas or Arizona, if it is still very hot. It is good to plant most shrubs and bushes in the early fall, once it cools a bit. This gives the plant time to grow some nice roots before winter.

We live in Missouri, so I'm guessing Zone 5?

I would plant anything that gives you something useful to eat or use.I love berry bushes.Sweet scented bushes are nice near a window.Sorry no specific shrubs come to mind other than my currants, rose hip, and virburnums(sp).

Now is the perfect time to get discounted plants.I got some salvia last year and butterfly bushes for cheap. They settled in before winter and did great the next year.

Yeah now is a great time to be planting bushes in the midwest, because the plant can spend time putting down roots without also spending energy on spring floweing and being in excessive heat.

It is also a time that nurseries put things on sale because people are so over gardening.
