FF baby wants to nurse....?

When DD wakes up from nap/night in that way that you KNOW they want to go back to sleep, she does this weird thing where she arches her head and back waaaaay back and to the side with her mouth open and apparently searching for something. She gets frustrated that she doesn't find what she's looking for and in her frustration wakes up completely. Neither pacifier nor bottle can satisfy this need, and my instincts tell me she's rooting for the breast, although she doesn't try to take it if I offer. I thought sucking a pacifier while snuggling close might help, but it doesn't. Anyone else have a twisty-archy-mouthy baby? How do you satisfy a nursing craving in a FF baby?

My sitter gives bottle of pumped milk to my son. i've seen her do it-- she holds him real tight and close with two hands and sort of props the bottle with her chin. I had never seen anyone do that before, but DS drops off to sleep with her like nobody's business.

Maybe you could try bottle nursing?

my dd did this when she was about 4 months old and learning to roll over. i spoke with a friend of mine who has a phd in early childhood development and she said this might be what was going on:
when a baby is learning new skills, the neurons are firing all the time in the particular area that is learning. sometimes they fire so much, a lo's sleep may be disturbed by the brain telling the body to do the new trick it's learning. so babies may find them selves sitting up, standing, rolling in their sleep as they are learning these things.

for my dd, it also could have been her wriggling toward the edge of the co-sleeper in an effort to mash her face up against the side. i think she likes to sleep like this because it feels cozy. she's a very snuggly baby and likes to sleep swaddled. once i started putting her in the co-sleeper snugged up to the side of it, she settled down quicker and stayed asleep longer. but, she also learned to roll over around this time so i'm not sure if that was it.

now sure if either one of these items help, good luck!

I would let her nurse, even if you don't have any milk. If you can give a baby a pacifier to calm herself down, why not Mom herself!
