Sophie the Giraffe-abducted today!

Well...it was only a matter of time...our beloved Sophie was abducted today at the Liberty Science Center in NJ.

DD2 dropped her & I saw her, turned to grab DD1 who was running for the turtles in a big glass display case & when I turned back, she was GONE! We literally had only walked 10 feet from where she was dropped & it was a matter of seconds...we checked with lost & found & hung in the area for awhile to see if we "spotted" her (pun intended) but to no avail...

We could probably get away without another one because we have a few other great teething toys but DD2 really did dig her & found so many spots on her to chew on.

I used my Bed, Bath & Beyond coupon at Buy Buy Baby & have new ones...so instead of a $20 loss...it's a $15 loss

Well, I have noted that other babies' Sophies are far more delicious than one's own Sophie. She's just inherently tempting to steal.

Maybe this is incredibly ignorant of me, but what is it with Sophie the giraffe? I don't live in the US so not sure if it's such a craze over here, although our osteopath has one for the baby sessions. How did this whole craze get started? I don't really get it.

@ P.J., I live in the US and still don't get it! I only first heard about it on this site a month or so ago (the "Let's see your Sophie in action" thread)...but ever since then have been noticing the things EVERYWHERE!

i also don't get it. when i first saw one i thought it was a cute looking retro toy but a little weird that the baby who owned it would always be holding it. then i saw the price tag and i really didn't get it.
but apparently once you have sophie you never go back. i dunno....

Get a pacifier holder for Sophie

My DD (6.5 months) has a Sophie giraffe as well. She likes it too. Knowing that she drops and throws many of toys (Sophie included), I wrap a pacifier holder on one of Sophie's legs in hopes of not losing it when we're out. Given the price of Sophie, DD will only get one. BTW, my DD likes the cheaper vanilla scented teething chews by Vulli better than Sophie, which I also attach to pacifier cords.

so sad. We were lucky with ours one day, I guess DD dropped it as i was taking her out of her carseat at the store and I didn't notice. When I came back to the car there was poor forlorn Sophie, lying on the pavement next to our car. Thank heavens no one abducted her while we were in the store!

I think a lot of people don't "get" sophie. And I have heard of a few kids who didn't like her. But most kids LOOOOVE her.

I'd rather spend $20 on one great toy than a few dollars here and there on crappy ones she doesn't like.

believe me-i never thought we'd be into sophie. but dd2 was a much different kind of teether than dd1...started so early & has been non stop. she really needed something she could dig into & we were desperate. none of the normal things seemed to be doing the trick. when i read here that sophie had so many great places for them to gnaw on & folks were raving i decided it was worth a try.

and she was. she could get the legs to her back gums & lengthwise on her front too & the little nobby spots on her head are great too. her ears, her nose...she is a really well designed teether.

Sorry about the loss. I wish DD liked Sophie. My guess is that a baby who gets teeth early is more likely to like her. DD didn't get any teeth until this month and NOTHING interests her as a teether. Unless you could try to eat her brothers stickers or play dough.

I'm sorry for you loss. I know how it feels. Our Sophie has been through some incidents, the horrors of which I dare not describe here. Since an unfortunate incident with a car wheel, she had become mute. However, she finally met her end last weekend at the hands (paws) of my mother's dog, who is a Sophie fiend.
Sigh.

Alright folks, I may be convinced. My baby has been drooling excessively since he was 2m.o., and lately he's been sucking on any and everything, and now that he can hold things he puts everything directly in his mouth. I can only assume all this is leading up to teeth. We may just have to get us a Sofie.

But yeah, um, $20???? That's absurd!

Ok, I have to admit I had to look up what Sophie was (I don't live in the states currently) and I might have to get one for the baby's stocking.

Sorry you lost her. We lost one of DD's toys once and I had to go get a replacement since it was one of her favorites. Now I dont allow her to carry toys around with her places unless its something she won't care if she loses.

She is big over here in Switzerland....we received 2 as baby gifts, which is good b/c ds LOVES her and we're always losing her or leaving her in the car.

I have my eye on getting a Sophie for my dd. I'm not sure what the appeal is but it's sooo cute and I'm smitten.

Sophie is made in France and was first created in 1961. It's not just an American craze!

We got one as a gift, this time around. Apparently it's some sort of top awarded toy or something? I like that it's natural rubber... and Ds does seem to really like it. I kinda dig that it's retro, and whatever, but I don't know that i would have bought one having never had one. Now that we have one, I agree with previous posters who said it's worth the $20 for a good toy that babies like...

and remember...if you have a buy buy baby near you, you can use a non expired bed bath & beyond 20% off OR their $5 off any item over $15 coupon...

I thought the Sophie craze was a bit ridiculous at first...but DD is a super chewer/drooler and I know she will love a Sophie. There is a BuyBuy Baby opening here soon, so hopefully I can get one then!

Sophie is the best $20 I've ever spent, I think. DS is 2.5 and still LOVES her.
