I just saw this recipe for Lactation cookies and thought it might be fun to make them with my kids while in early labor

Anyone else baking in early labor? want to share ideas?

Yum! I hadn't even thought of baking, and I have been trying so hard to come up with things to keep me busy during early labor! Hmm... I can't wait to see what everyone else says, and I will sleep on it.

I'm really not much of a baker of dessert-y like things. I can do bread and some muffins...I'm a great cook...but I just can't do really sweet stuff. I tried to make a chocolate birth day cake in early labor last time and it came out a pancake. It tasted good though and made us laugh.

Early labor activities this time include: a superbrew of RRL tea, seaweed soup for PP eats, and steeping some sitz herbs for my PP baths. Oh and remembering to take some stinky blue cheese out of the freezer for PP sandwiches!

These sound SO good! The only thing is, with the oven on it could very well raise our house temp. and it's already 100+ degrees outside. So that may be reserved for night time labor.

We are also making our list of other activities, which are, finishing the final season of Lost, writing letter to baby, making baby shower announcements, cleaning my grout lines in my living room (also will help baby get into posterior position) cleaning the freezer, upholstering the car, and I have a few puzzles too for the MWs when I don't need them.

omg those sound sooooo good!!!!!! i definitely want to make them! i dont know about making them in early labor but i might make a ton before hand and freeze some for later! hehe thank you so much for sharing!!!!

Sounds good, but maybe I'll make them BEFORE labor begins and stick them in the freezer. I had originally put "baking" on my list of ideas for labor projects... but then I realized that I will probably leave the oven on once labor gets more intense and burn the house down!!! (Even when not in labor, I am famous for leaving oven and burner on and burning otherwise-perfectly delicious treats.)

OK, I'm feeling brave and want to bake these cookies. Would it be the end of the world to use rolled oats? I have lots of them at home....

ED: just read the recipe and perhaps rolled oats is what she means...they are in the picture anyway. I got confused when she said not quick oats...I do mine on the stovetop in about 5-7 minutes...I thought perhaps that was quick.

In my opinion too, 5-7 minutes is nice and quick! But, official "quick oats" are more like 2 min I think. They are like sawdust. I believe this recipe is calling for regular 'ol rolled oats.

Great, then I just need brewer's yeast and I'm ready to bake. Thanks!
Wish me luck!

stalking you, Heather

I made these at the end of my preg. (not early labor) and I froze 2/3 of the batter for post-partum. Highly recommend freezing the batter for later!

How lovely to be stalked by you! I will definitely make these, I actually have everything on hand including the fenugreek seeds that I typically use in Lentil Stew. Glad to know someone tried them and I will try freezing some of the batch too!

38 weeks, no action yet...

I have everything now. Can I freeze the actual cookies or do I have to freeze the batter?
i assume you can freeze the actually cookies.. since i freeze cookies all the time and these aren;t anything crazy!

i just need the brewers yeast and i'm ready to bake! i'm excited to try these!

You can freeze either. I like freezing cookies better than batter.

I just made them today. In labor, I would prefer to do something that does not involve heat. They are yummy and VERY filling. I skipped the nuts (DS does not like them yet) and they turned out really well.

I was not sure about the oats either, so I went to Whole Foods and got both rolled and steel cut. How much do I love the bulk food section - so cheap! And you need rolled. I will eat the steel cut for post-partum breakfasts. Yum.

Remember to put your flax in the fridge after you open it. You can also freeze it if you're not going to use it that often.
