Starting the ADHD journey....again

This is not a new road for us. My eldest son (T-15yrs) was Dx w/ADHD in the 2nd grade, was on meds for about a yr (living with his bio-dad) and then went untreated for 3yrs (till he came back to live w/me), took us another 2yrs to get an IEP (schools avoided me like a plague, till he got a good school counselor that saw he was falling thru the cracks) and now we were looking for a better fit for his meds (was on Concerta- highest dose his provider could write and started to become ineffective). We've tried Aderal but the side effect of irritability sets off his ODD and is just not a good fit. He does seem to be getting "better" w/age and maturity but still needs help to focus on school work. He's been off meds most of the summer (his request) and it's gone well.

Anyways as you can see we've been on this road and now it begins again....

My younger son (O) had been Dx w/ADHD. He's 5.5 and I am not here to debate whether or not you can Dx a child that young w/it correctly because I know my son and he's on some levels much more affected by it than my ods. I am ok with the Dx because he is young and is just starting his school journey so we can get him an IEP early and it'll follow him and hopefully his school exp will be much better than my 1st's.

O is seeing a Developmental Ped and I think the Dr. is actually quite progressive- he's not pushing meds and wants to start w/play therapy and look at diet and other factors to help him first. I was prepared to go in and put my foot down if he talked about meds at first (being O is just 5.5 and tho I do believe meds are an opt I feel there are alot of other things to try first esp in someone so young) but I didn't have to.

So I'm here to see if anyone has any recs on more natural therapies. Homeopathic, herbal, etc. We are looking for something really to help him calm down just a bit (he's ALWAYS bouncing off walls or "On"). Also maybe some ideas on things to help him sleep- he's restless and doesn't seem to reach the "good" sleep point very much at night- this is the same w/my ODS and T attributes it to not being able to breath well (feels his nose is always clogged- we're going to talk to his prac about this and see if there's anything to do). I think better sleep for both will help tenfold!

We have seen real improvements in ds's ADHD-type behaviors when we give him OTC antihistamines during seasonal allergy months. Also, quercitin to calm the immune response along with EFAs. I've been reading a book called Healing the 4A Childhood Syndromes: autism, ADHD, asthma and allergies, and the author provides a great list of nutritional and dietary strategies. He's a medical doctor.

ETA: also melatonin to support sleep and avoiding allergenic foods. A very good book that discusses sleep hygeine is Sleepless in America.

I thought this article on exercise and ADHD was interesting.

Since he has sleep problems I would check into getting a sleep study done; I've read a couple of articles that essentially said that chronic sleep deprivation/inadequate sleep is frequently misdiagnosed as ADHD. Though lack of sleep made ds behavior worse, once he would settle to sleep he slept well, we just had to get him to bed early enough that he had time to settle in.

My ds is 6.6 and on Concerta. I would not have described him as hyper, except for the last month of school--we started him on a liquid magnesium supplement that dealt with the hyperness, but he still had problems with needing constant movement at school (hand flapping, spinning, running) and an inability to focus; ds was in ISS 5x and suspended 2x last year. If you search my posts on this board you would find the bullet list I took to the Dr.

We are waiting on an appointment with a developmental ped and are meeting with a CBT next week. So far this week we haven't had any negative reports from his teacher.
