Thick Water Kefir

My mother asked me to ask you about her water kefir. Her kefir has been turning out wonderfully until her most recent batch. This time she used raw sugar instead of dead white sugar. Is it possible that this negatively affected her kefir? The liquid is slightly thick and very yeasty smelling.

Any ideas?

Strange. I'd toss the liquid. Rinse the grains and make another batch. If it happens again, I'd expect the grains were dead from too much heat, some how.
