Thanks again all, thought I would let you know how it went. Baby was a big hit with DD! I don't think I've seen her be particularly attached to a toy, but she loves toting baby around and "taking care" of it. I guess it's easy to identify with since I've seen her "swinging" and "tickling" baby, and she was interested in what baby should eat at dinnertime, etc.

I went with a Corolle 14", the smell was not overwhelming. It's not exactly vanilla, sort of vanilla-esque and not as strong as I expected. I decided the soft body would be cuddly while having somewhat realistic limbs/face. I was able to find one with a nice gender-nuetral outfit, jean overalls and coral striped shirt:

I also got the doll carrier from A Toy Garden (only available in dark blue right now, luckily DD's fave), it's nice and simple and the zipper is a very fun/practical feature! There's room for a bigger doll, and I think I saw some sort of pouch inside for a smaller doll. DD is not ready to wear baby yet but it has been a fun "swing" so far.

hi there! I am making baby doll carrier that are more like an ergo design, with clips, which my daughter loves! She loves working the clips, and she also like that the carrier looks like the one we use and stays on when she bends/jumps/plays. they fit most baby dolls of small and medium size (not the really huge giant ones :)

I am making a few right now and here is one up on etsy for sale on my page (i hope im aloud to like this?)
