Question about the HIB vaccine

Okay I'm really puzzled by the hib vaccine. I understand the serotypes and all but what I don't get is why it's called actHIB. That's the one my son's ped pushes and the manufacturer is Sanofi Pasteur. I tried looking up the ingredients and found this link:

http://www.novaccine.com/specific-va...ne.asp?v_id=18

So according to this link this vax contains tetanus protein? Why? I mean would it make this vax be a combo shot now because of the tetanus protein?
Also are there any other chemicals or adjuvants in it or would that be included in the saline solution but this site doesn't mention it?

TIA

The original HIB vax was a polysacharide vax. The newer ones are conjugate vaxes (Like the ACTHIB).

read section 5.1. It explains why the tetanus protein is needed. It is not the same as a tetanus shot. Getting this HIB vaccines does not induce an antibody response for tetanus.

As for other ingredients in ACTHIB, that all depends on what it is reconstituted with. If it is reconstituted with saline then yes, there is nothing else in it.

Thanks Marnica,

But because the tetanus protein is still there can it still cause a reaction?

Here's some background: Dh and I have been sitting on the fence a lot about this and this one is my son's ped favorite. Anyway Wednesday was my ds wbv (I went in there with my decision to not get any for him) and I let myself be talked into this one by his ped and HUGE mistake. My son had a reaction to which according to his ped is normal so they can't do anything except recommend tylenol (we have not given him tylenol, and yes I'm still dealing with his reaction). He's doing better now, and I guess the positive side is that my h saw the reaction and agrees with me now to not give anymore to him. I'm still mad and pissed and have no idea why I let myself be talked into this by his dr. Thanks for reading, sorry about the vent, I feel horrible.

Wonder why your ped was pushing it...unless the child is in daycare (and even that's a stretch) there's really no need for the vax.

Sorry about the reaction - I hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Sorry he had a reaction. There is not much IN the ACTHIB but the inactivated tetanus toxoid and the purified capsular polysaccharide. The tetanus toxoid is prepared by extraction, ammonium sulfate purification, and formalin inactivation of the toxin from cultures of Clostridium tetani (Harvard strain) grown in a modified Mueller and Miller medium. So although it is "inactivated", it's IN there. Of course he could have areaction to any ingredient used in anay vaccine. Soory this has happened, but you can't go back. I'm sure he will be fine and at least you know you will never allow yourself to be talked into anything again! At for not giving tylenol. If LO needs pain relief, please consider homeopathics instead.

Thank you guys for the replies. He knows I'm a sahm, anyway I think that's the one he likes.
My son is doing better, we're using homeopathic treatments to deal with it, and I've upped his intake of vit. c and a and I truly believe that's why it didn't get worse. He was screaming sooo loud the first night saying owie, and couldn't move his leg at the injection site, the second day he was really clingy for being an independent little boy and slept a whole lot and now has a rash that I suspect is staph. Everything I put on it hurts him. Just writing this down makes me cry but let it be a reminder for me everytime I question my decision. His ped is now pushing the prevnar along with dtap because I'm pregnant and it will protect my newborn baby against pertussis. I've studied that one enough to know that's not true, but what gets me with all of this is how these vaccines are studied for their efficacy. I mean they get two groups of kids one being the control, and instead of giving the control group a placebo they give another vaccine. I'm just now finding this out looking up the prevnar and how they freaking compared it to dtap and I am so mad! Sorry for the rant, and thanks again.
