So I'm curious... I'm hoping to be pregnant in the near future, and I'm wondering about early pregancy, especially with my job, which can be a bit intense at times. I know there's only one way to find out but I thought a survey on pregnancy-related sickness might be interesting.

If you've been pregnant multiple times and had different experiences, answer the question based on your first pregnancy, just for consistency. Feel free to post with more info!

I was surprised at how sick I was. I never gave it much thought before I became pregnant. I started getting sick at 6weeks and am still in survival mode at 18 weeks. I tried every self-treatment that anyone suggested but I finally got a prescription for Zofran that allowed me to function a little better.

I had HG, was nearly hospitalized and was released from my job (I was still only a temp so they could do that, even with medical reason)

I chose "I did not experience. . ." because I never vomited or needed any treatment, but I did have about a month of nausea that was triggered by certain smells.

However, what I did experience, was extreme fatigue and emotional insanity those first few months. The really bad part lasted a month, and then got better.

I was coming home from work at 5:30, scarfing some food, going to bed at like quarter after 6 and then sleeping until 6:30 when I had to get up for work. I just always felt like I had been up for days partying or something.

Also, I was just emotionally crazy, like one careless comment from DH, could just cause me to flip out. Or even if I felt he didn't answer my question right. I even had a mini meltdown at work once and had to just pass it off on the insane schedule in the office.

I am only telling you this because I wish someone had told me, so I would have been prepared!!! I have a high stress job where lots of people count on me to solve big problems and be a "rock" for them. It took me some to realize I was an emotional wreck and just accept that my internal tension and feeling like I needed to lash out was not real, and then I could work to calm myself.

People on MDO assured me this would go away, and it did! I am 17 weeks and feel totally normal now. I just wish I had known at first that it would go away, because I was getting depressed at the thought of feeling so bad for 9 months!

I'm in my second pregnancy and I have had all day nausea, but not really any vomiting. This time around not much makes it better. The first time, I laid in bed and did my work (I work from home) and watched movies. This time I'm just doing what I can to relax and take it easy. Sometimes I actually find it easier to ignore when I'm out and about and distracted.

I got this but the nausea was so bad I had to select it as "mild MS" instead.

For me it was keeping my blood sugar normal...and finding my "cure food" (OJ and tortilla chips!)

I had mild "all day sickness" that wasn't always alleviated by self treatment, but it wasn't debilitating, just uncomfortable. It didn't interfere with normal activities at all, although I did need to rest more than I did before pregnancy. I only vomited a handful of times during my first pg, and only after eating lowfat or skim dairy products (so vomiting stopped as soon as I figured that out and stopped eating dairy.)

I generally felt OK first thing in the mornings, but felt nauseated later in the day when I was more tired. I never understood why they call it "morning" sickness.

First off, I hate that it's called "Morning sickness." While I loathed the book, "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" - so much so that I couldn't bring myself to even donate it because I didn't want others reading it (I recycled it) I did agree with the author on one point:
It ought to be called "Progesterone Poisoning."
That clears up the ridiculous myth that it's isolated to mornings (many women have it all day) and conveys the seriousness of the condition.

With #1, I really was fine. I had a little bit of queasiness. I vomited only once though -- was up much earlier in the morning than usual & rushing around a bit. Taking it easier & slower in the AM fixed it, like sitting down while I brushed my teeth.

I had a little fatigue, but nothing major. I was functional mostly all the time. It seemed to gang up on me on Sundays - ha! So I'd feel pretty good 6 days a week, then Sunday just spend all day on the couch. Convenient anyway since I had a lot of reading to do.

It didn't really disrupt my life at all - had my full-time office job, plus teaching aerobics, plus my own weightlifting & boxing workouts, chores, social events, etc. No prob!

But "poisoned" very accurately reflects how dreadful ill I've felt with #2 since 7W along. Exactly like a really, really bad wine hangover 24/7.

I'll be 12W tomorrow & just the past few days, nausea has lightened up, only to be replaced with headaches. So I'm still a mess & not able to function.

If you want to try to get something of an idea how you will personally feel, you might want to ask your own mom, if you can & any sisters if you have them & they've had kids. While it's certainly no guarantee, I do think there's some chance of some similarities. My mom has always said pregnancy & birth was such a piece of cake for her, "it was like falling off a log." & she had 3 of us. My Gma said it was easy for her too - and she had two kids in her early/mid-30s.

Only, for most women its not caused by the progesterone, so Progesterone Poisoning would be just as inaccurate of a name as Morning Sickness.

I'm not sure what to choose here. I had severe m/s, I would have bouts of vomiting between 8 and 15 times a day. I was given a prescription by my doctor, which I used very minimally because I did not appreciate the drowsiness associated with the medication.

However, I did not miss a moment of work. I worked through it. I know that isn't possible for everyone, I worked unconventional jobs with weird hours, but I worked over 60 hours a week. I could tell when I was about to vomit, I would get to the staff bathroom and stay there until I knew I was done. Was it ideal? No. But I needed the hours for Maternity leave and it ended up working out in the end.

I picked "other." With my first child I was sick all day, but the vomiting was limited to about once in the morning when I brushed my teeth. I couldn't eat a whole lot, because everything made me sick.
This pregnancy is completely different. I didn't start getting really sick until about week 7. But now vomiting 2-3 times a day for no reason. Sometimes I'll just be thinking about drinking Sprite, and it will set me off for the bathroom. I can eat, but after I eat I want to throw up. Zofran works for a couple hours, but then it wears off and it's back. I have not missed any work though it is pretty debilitating, and I find that I'm not nearly as productive as usual. (Could be because it's two little beans this time around though).

I chose "I had moderate MS that was sometimes alleviated by self-treatment ".. Both times it has started around 6-7 weeks and last time it was gone around 16 weeks. I'm only 14 weeks and still experiencing it. With medication I only throw up once every couple days instead of 4-5 times a day, I still have almost constant nausea.

I had severe MS that started not even two weeks after my BFP (which I took a couple days before I was due for my period) and lasted into the second tri by a little bit.

However, I probably should have gone to the ER a couple times for dehydration BUT I also think my circumstances led me to being so bad. I think I would have otherwise just been moderate if I had better circumstances.

I chose "mild morning sickness." Between two pregnancies, I vomited exactly three times, and it was all fruit-related. Some days I felt slightly nauseous all day (it was especially bad when I worked for EMS, because I tend towards car-sickness, anyway).

Yup.

Only for me, it was lemonade and salt-n-vinegar potato chips. Yours sounds healthier.

I also carried Jolly Ranchers in my pockets for those times when meals weren't easily accessible. Sometimes our ambulance would go out on a call and lunch/dinner would be delayed for quite some time.

Never got sick.

I didn't have any nausea with DD1, but did with the next two. I'd call it mild because I never did vomit but rather felt like I could any second for 3 months each pg.

How about "Pregnancy Poisoning"?
I never got sick, though the smell of any meat product made me horribly nauseous for the first 10-12 weeks.
I chose "I did not experience any". There was about a week that I felt a little queasy when I drove the car. I never vomited or felt like I was going to, but I would say there were a few days where every bump in the road made me feel icky.

I was really expecting a lot of "pregnancy poisoning". So I kept thinking "it's coming tomorrow or next week" but it never did. My biggest complaint was that I was constantly STARVING and couldn't get enough food to eat.

but I chose mild morning sickness. A glass of water and a snack usually made it go away.
