Pacifiers? What kind?

Went to the LC today. Dd is sucking a certain way that cuts off circulation to my nipples - she does this probably to control milk flow (overactive let down). One thing suggested was trying a pacifier (because she also wants to suck and suck and suck, for now my finger, even when she's totally FULL of milk). She told me to just be watchful of if using a paci helps, causes no change or negative change to how dd is nursing/latching. If latch gets worse to discontinue paci use immediately.

So... nobody will recommend or nay say against certain types or brands of pacifiers. With ds the LCs had recommended the "MAM" pacifiers. Now they won't recommend any specific type and say it makes no difference.

I the natersutten paci ( you can find it on cottonbabies or at whole foods) it is made in Germany out of rubber ( thus no bpa and such) plus it's really cute.

Natursutten

Does it matter if it's the rounded kind or the Orthodontic shaped nipple?

My LC told me to avoid anything that was a bulb shape or had a flat edge (like the Nuk). She felt the "soothie" brand was the best (The First Years makes it I think).

the "Soothie" works best for us too, plus it'a BPA free.

We use a Gerber natural-shaped style, it's clear in the middle. When DS was small people would comment on being able to see his lips through the paci. I don't know if it will help with your issue.

We also used The First Years Breastflow bottles while I was at work, some of the reviews suggest it helps teach latching.

I swore the pacis I got from my shower wouldn't be used...then one day I got totally touched-out. I'm using the Soothie brand. Ds will take it about 1/2 the time and of that he'll actually get to a real sucking session omit about 1/2 the time. He makes it known that he'd really prefer the boob.

It has been my experience that the baby will choose. We tried several brands with DS and finally he settled on the avent paci. It seems that DD is not going to take one at all.

Soothies. And if you want to double up on cuteness, as well as make it less likely you'll lose the paci, try a Wubbanub. They're soooo cute! http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is...112?k=Wubbanub

I started V on a paci at about a week old, as I had wicked oversupply and OAL- we started on the Nuks, but, since she was (and is) a tummy-sleeper, she'd crank them out everytime she turned her head, so we switched to MAMS. She still takes a MAM for nap and bedtime and cranky-pants time, but has a whole bunch of different ones she likes to play with.

I realized this am that I need to 86 the Soothies, as she got her thumb stuck in the hole. She liked it, I did not.

My sister's week-old newborn was probably a tongue-sucker in utero, and she just started him on MAMs, too, and they seem to be working pretty well at helping his latch.

I would try a soothie first, they seem easier for babies to take at first and have no upside down problems. Just buy 1 (or 2 if you can't get 1) and try it and see. My DD still won't take one very well, especially if I am around, but those worked the best for her of all the ones I tried. She likes to suck on her lovey blanket more than any pacifier though, so that might be something to try too, it has little tabs of fabric on it that she especially likes.

Generally I wouldn't recommend a paci unless its really necessary. She was born this month, right? (Congratulations!) Overactive letdown--just let some spray off into a cloth before she really settles in to nurse.

If you are going to try a paci, i'd suggest the soothies. They're one piece, so you don't have to worry about them coming apart or bacteria getting inside. And they're soft so if baby ends up laying on top of it, it won't hurt. The wubbanubs are helpful for making sure the paci doesn't get lost. (And they're adoreable, of course!)
