Need some recommendations, please!

My DD has never watched TV (she just turned one), but I am due with our next LO in April. I am thinking that I should probably have some DVDs on hand for marathon nursing sessions. I already have some of the Scholastic Storybook collections from when I was teaching, but I am looking for DVDs that might actually teach letter, colors, counting, science, art, or some other concepts. What would you recommend? Thanks so much!

I recommend the Preschool Prep Collection. I tried one of their DVDs from the library this week with DD and she already knows her shapes. I like it because it's not character based but learning based. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much! I just looked them up on Amazon and they look great. Exactly like the sort of thing that I am looking for.

Why not Sesame Street? Are you afraid of the tie-ins?

We love pbs kids and nick jr. Yes, they are commercialized... but they really do teach stuff. Word world & super why on pbs kids in the mornings teach lots of letters/reading/etc, as does sesame street... other shows mostly just teach being good friends.

I think at 1 she will have no interest in that sort of stuff, well mine didnt. SS was a no go unless Elmo was talking.

I would do Oswald, Little Bear and Kipper.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking DVDs simply because they don't have commercials, which I really don't want DD watching. DVRing shows from PBS are also an option. The only show I know of is Between the Lions which she is not old enough for. I had forgotten about Sesame Street. I really don't care about characters being commercialized as long as DD isn't actually watching commercials. I have never watched Nick Jr or Disney, but I assume that all their shows for toddlers have commercials. Thanks, again.

Me too, my DD loved and still loves these at almost 4. Kipper you can get streaming on Netflix too which is great. Little Bear seriously saved my sanity in the early months of my pregnancy with DS, it would keep my crazy 2 year old DD at bay and many times she'd fall asleep when it was on.

I also like Super Why, but that may be a bit advanced. I swear though it helped DD learn her alphabet, they really get into sounds and vocabulary, which my DD was into from a very young age.

My DD watched a lot of TV when I was puking sick and most of my miserable pregnancy with DS. It was the only way I could function.

Actually pbs from 6 or 7am till 5-6pm (depending on where your at) is just kids' shows free of commercials (well, except for other pbs shows...), as is nick jr 24/7. Even Playhouse disney (which is, again designed for 2-5 yr olds) is free of commericals during the day.

NickJr is commercial free. My 18 month old's only interests are Wonder Pets and The Backyardigans...and she doesn't really "watch" them, but they both have lost of singing, which she likes. Wonder Pets more so, because the motion is fairly slow, the songs are repetitious, and the characters are recognizable.

We just got rid of cable and are using iTunes for the shows we want. Much cheaper, and everything we like is available....

This is what I was going to recommend, especially for that age. It teaches signs, but also concepts and words in general, and there are so many songs, especially in Baby Signing Time.
