umbilical cord off too early? HELP

my son is 9 days old and his umbilical cord is hanging on by a thread. the inside of his belly button looks almost gooey, like its not healed all the way, but i cant tell if its that or pus. it has been bleeding a little but i dont no if thats because the stump is literally hanging by a thread. has anyone seen something like this before? what would you do?

That sounds kind of normal to me. I remember there being gunk, and I think it doesn't completely heal up until the cord is all the way off for a few days. It could be infected, but keeping it clean & dry will probably help with that, or you call your pediatrician's office and ask if it doesn't clear up in a few days. I'm sure someone else will have better info.

When ds's did that I did put alcohol on it because I was terrified of infection. It got rid of the gunk totally in less than 24hours.

It's fine. You can use rubbing alcohol to dry it uber quick, use witch hazel, powdered Oregon grape root. It will all work.

Similar thing happened with my oldest son except for it smelled SO bad. Smelled like a garbage dumpster. Pediatrician said to just dab it with rubbing alcohol and within 24 hours it was ok, looked a lot better and no smell.

My ds's also had the smell I totally freaked when I saw it. My mw had told me to not use alcohol on it but when I had dd they told me to use it. I never had anything like that with her but it took her cord almost a month to come off while ds's took about 1.5 weeks.
