Potty troubles with a 17 month old

My 17 month old has been using the potty sporadically for a few months. She has had a few runs where her diaper stays dry for a couple of days. Other times it's a diaper. This has all been at her lead. I only started offering the potty as an option because she was very interested.

Lately we have a problem. She holds her bladder for hours. She gets increasingly aggitated. She won't sit on the potty, but she won't use her diaper. She has the option of a little potty or a ring on the big potty. We express that she can use the bathroom or her diaper.

Eventually the bladder wins and she soaks her diaper and is upset about it.

I'm not sure how to help her here.

We have a 16 month old with a similar thing going on. She tells us she has to go by saying "poo" (what she calls pee or poo) and pointing to her diaper. Some days she happily goes on the potty, other days when I try to pick her up to get her diaper off she cries and when I bring her to the potty she won't sit on it and runs away. I also wondered why this was.

We have some similar issues. I think for DS he feels 'caught in two worlds' if that makes sense. He is using the potty a couple times a day and diapers the rest of the time. I think he'd do so much better if only I could dedicate a few days to full-on potty-training and get rid of the diapers once & for all, but since he refuses to poop in the potty I'm kind of hesitant. Plus he hates being home (and so do I) so stepping back from our constant daily outings isn't something I'm too gun-ho about. Anyway. If you are able to, I'd try that -- stopping the diapers & letting her totally train, if you think she's ready.

I was going to suggest dropping the diapers and just having her in cotton undies or naked as much as you can. That was the push we needed (although my DS was close to 3) to get over the hump.
