I need to find a new solution.
For years now, we've used a cheap felt blanket to cover the dog's side of the couch. It does a good enough job at keeping dirt and drool off the couch cushions, but hair sticks to it like it's a lint roller and NEVER comes off, no matter how often I wash it, vacuum, or take lint tape to it. It's just ground in. It's also really trashy looking.
We tried using an old fitted sheet, but it was too thin - dirt sifted through the weave and drool just soaked right in.
We bought a nicer looking blanket from Ikea, and it's the worst of all - it catches on her paw pads and gets pulled off every time she moves, in addition to catching hair and every little burr she brings in from outside.
Advice? What do you use? I don't want to spend a ton of $ (Orvis sells a couch cover for $80, which seems ridiculous) and I have a sewing machine, though I'm no great shakes at it. I need something that's thick enough to protect the couch but hopefully a little breathable (since the dog gets quite warm with the blankets in the summer), isn't hideous to look at (our decor is just natural wood furniture, brown couch, white and pale yellows fabrics, very minimalist), heavy enough to stay on reasonably well, but won't hold on to dog hair. I have a 1-month old infant in the house now and I need to find a new solution so he's not breathing in dander every time we sit down.
Any crafty ideas? Canvas? Muslin? (though anything white will show dirt WAY too quickly) Some other material I don't know about on one side and something else on the other? I'm at a loss.
