Favorite things about CDing?!

Thread Starter
Hi all! I am pretty new to CDing and I love it! I used disposables on my son for about 14 months... I used a diaper service in the beginning months and hated it. (Didn't like the prefolds and covers I had, but didn't have enough money to build a stash at the time...also didn't have a washer and dryer!)

Now we've got our own house, a new W/D, and I have recently bought/inherited a ton of diapers, mostly second-hand on eBay, DiaperSwappers, etc. It can be done on a budget! Various kinds, although the Happy Heinys are my favorites so far...

What are your favorite things about CDing? My favorite thing is the sense of self-reliance I get from CDing. I don't have to drive across town to Target anymore when I'm out of dipes. I don't have to spend $14 bucks on a box of throwaway dipes when I'm almost out of money that week and would MUCH rather spend it on something else! And I don't have to deal with that annoying, nagging feeling of filling up a landfill with wasteful dipes that take forever to decompose.

I love CDing!

after switching to cloth my dd is much more aware of her bladder. when we started I had to change her every 15 minutes. now we go up to 3 hours without a wet diaper. I think it's really helped as we've begun PLing too.

I like knowing my child isn't contributing to the tremendous problem the world has with waste.

I like how there's not a weird chemical smell.

I like how they don't explode with gel.

And like the OP, I loved not having to go to the store to buy more diapers. I just had to run a load of laundry.

I think my favorite part was the feeling that I was really doing something to help keep trash out of landfills, and knowing that the waste was treated properly. I really enjoyed trying new diapers and getting fluffy mail, too.

I love all the above - I feel rather virtuous using CDs and I LOVE using them in public when other mothers (of young children and of grown children) are impressed with how great they are - I'm terrible - I always take my cutest diapers when we're on the road to show them off! I adore neon green diapers for some reason and am always on the lookout for more neon.

But actually I think what I like the best is the problem-solving part of it. What diapers are best for when? Which work best for DS? Why did this leak and what can I do to stop it? That's weird, isn't it.

I admit that I don't enjoy pockets as much as I used to. I used to enjoy putting them all together after a wash, but that has worn thin.

I love being able to try out different brands. I'm mainly cover + prefold/insert type of gal (I started with pockets, though), and I love all the new sorts of covers they've come out with (Thirsties Duo Wraps, WeeHuggers, Bummis, Flip, etc).

We started CDing to save money, and that's definitely the main reason, but all the cute little prints definitely help me stick with it.

And, even though we didn't do it for the environment, it feels good knowing we're not contributing to the pile of trash in that area.

I really enjoy researching different aspects and styles of cloth diapering. Sometimes I look into things so much I dream about it all night.

Really and truely? How cute DD looks running around in her little "cotton butt".

I'll be honest here. I like doing things differently. I am the only CDer in my circle of family/work/friends.

In no certain order lol
How cute a cloth diapered bum looks
No chemicals against delicate skin
No running to the store (30 minutes one way for me) to get sposies
There is just something wonderful about putting dirty dipes in the washer and then a little while later folding them.
The money saving

Plus my family has extremely sensitive skin and the cloth is sooo much better!

because it's so cute!!
and i'm like a PP. i like showing off how cute it is in front of all the other moms those silly "jean" diapers don't hold a candle to my BGs!

I love how classic they are. My absolute favorite way to cloth diaper is flats and pins. You can't get more basic and oldschol than that. I adore it. I have used all different styles and brands of CD but I've finally settled on flats and wool.

I also love how they all look put away so nicely in their drawers. When I had mostly pockets, I kept them in rainbow order. My flats are all folded nicely. I keep fitteds separated by brand. I love the order of it all. sposies in a ripped plastic bag is NOT clean and orderly hahaha

It just makes me feel good though... seeing how they look on the clothesline or in the drawer or on kiddo... knowing they are clean and chemical free... no chemical smell... no extra garbage... its just all around good. and relaxing. and calm. and simple. and lovey

I love that I did not expose my children to huge amount of chemicals & plastics that cause

Cancer
Asthma
Male Infertility
Diaper Rash
and possible toxic ingestion

I liked that I I helped our household budget.
Saved 1 Gallon of fresh water per disposable NOT buying single use diapers.

I liked that I did not provide a free meal for the CEO of Proctor & Gamble or Kimberly Clark, instead investing in MY family.

I also love that my initial love for cloth diapers has morphed into a passion where I talk, teach and discuss cloth in public venues several times a month through my business.

My List

I loved how cloth diapers made our girls' dresses puff out.

I've always felt that cloth, particularly a separate diaper and cover combo, contains messy poop better than disposables.

DH loves that cloth diapers don't stink. The smell of the disposable diaper isle gives him a headache.

I love that cloth has saved us thousands and thousands of dollars.

I love that we don't have to lug big boxes of diapers home from the store. We don't have a car.

I love that we don't produce a lot of garbage. This was what actually got us started with cloth diapers. When DH and I first got married our neighbours had a baby, and I couldn't believe how much more garbage they were putting us than us.

#1 Cuteness factor!
#1.5 function - they just hold poo in better! and DS can't remove them . . . yet!
#2 doing things differently
#3 Saving money (I think . . .it is hard to tell, we bought most of our sposies with coupons and diaper deals. we didn't spend a whole lot)

I like knowing it is better for the environment, but that isn't why we switched.

somewhere between #1 and #2 is the smell. we still use sposies at night (had open packs we can't return) and I love changing him from that chemically smell ick to a cute diaper! that smells just like clean laundry, nothing more or less!
