Audiobooks for the car?

Any suggestions?

My kids are 7, 5 and 2.5. Aiming at the 7 year old and the 5 year old can pick up what she does.

ATM we listen to lots of stories, also Joy Hakim's history stuff, some edited Bill Bryson, and when I get myself organised, Boomerang.

We are secular and like science/maths/history/gardening. We're a bit Waldorfy too. But there isn't much we actively don't like.

Ideas?

Ralph S. Mouse http://www.amazon.com/Ralph-S-Mouse-...3092278&sr=8-1

We listened to it with our older batch of kids when we went to Carlsbad Caverns. They loved it and so did we. It's great to have an audio book that everyone enjoys.

I say go browse at your library. We've been doing that lately. Most recently my kids have enjoyed anything by Roald Dahl, and my daughter has been enjoying American Girl series on CD. But I was tempted by so many things at the library, and will be just browsing to see what looks good!

Oh, in the past, mine have also really enjoyed Three Tales of My Father's Dragon, and The City Under The Back Steps (purchased from Chinaberry, which is one of my all-time favorite catalogs to list and describe great books to read!)

You can also check out Jim Weiss recordings. There are many great ones (and some you should be able to request from your library), but you can also purchase from amazon or Fun-Books.com.

Good luck!

Jim Weiss anything is good. My kids at those ages liked Harry Potter already, but not everyone is ok with that. They are awesome audiobooks for the car, in particular.

My 6 yo loves the Magic Treehouse audio books.

We always have one going. We just finished Nim's Island. We own Ella Enchanted and the Harry Potter CDs, so they are on the rotation. The American Girl books are all on CD, and the Ramona books read by Stockard Channing are excellent.

lit2go has many classics on itunes for free. There will be some titles appropriate for your kids ages. We recently listened to The Secret Garden and it was great fun. You'd probably also like The Little Princess. A list of titles can be found here - http://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/

The audio quality varies (it is free!) but so far we've been pretty pleased with the readers. We loved Jane Eyre but that may be too dark for your young ones.

I was going to recommend Jim Weiss too. We love his voice. He does the audio for all the Story of the World cd's, plus he has quite a few out of different stories.

We loved Story of the World. I also checked out audio books from the library like Hank the Cow Dog. The grammar made me want to grit my teeth, but the stories were fun.

Librivox! There are tons of FREE audio books to download. I burn them to CDs or load them onto my iPod. My boys are almost-7 and just-turned-5. The only thing to get used to is that often each chapter will be read by a different person. That can be an adjustment at first. These are some we have listened to, or have on our list of things to listen to soon.

My Father's Dragon
The Burgess Animal Book for Children
The Burgess Bird Book for Children
The Insect Folk
Five Little Peppers and How They Grew
Stories of King Arthur's Knights Told to the Children
The Book of Dragons
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Aesop's Fables
Great Big Treasury of Beatrix Potter

And they aren't audio books, but we love to listen to They Might Be Giants songs from their Here Comes Science album. And The Water Cycle by SteveSongs is another favorite science song!

AudibleKids.com has a great deal (or at least they did) where you could get one book a month for 4 or 5 months for only $4.99. We got all the Percy Jackson books and the first Redwall book, and then canceled it when the special pricing was up.

Jessica, is librivox free?

I love the Little House audio books!!! They are very well done.

Taking notes here... thanks so much for the recommendations!

Full cast audio books (with different voices acting each character) have been huge hits here lately, especially anything by Bruce Coville. Our library has quite a few, so we have lucked out there! My 6.5 yr old is determined that we will read everything Coville has written together, and I'm up for that -- great kid's fantasy that keeps both him and his 12.5 yr old sister enthralled.

My fave so far from an educational standpoint is Coville's Thor's Wedding Day, which has taught my kids a lot about Norse mythology.

Full Cast Audio has done a wonderful job with some of Tamora Pierce's books, too. Try the Circle of Magic series starting with Sandry's Book. Bruce Colville reads a major role.

It's hard to go wrong with anything in the Chinaberry catalog. We are listening to the melendy family stories now-I think The Saturdays is the first CD. Absolutely wonderful for family listening. Also: The House Above the Trees and The Wind Boy.
