Magic Tree house books are great
Little House (Laura Ingalls Wilder) are good too.

This has motivated me to look into getting some audio books for the car. But when we're in the car we listen and practice to Pimsleur CDs or other foreign language learning audio stuff.

We also sometimes put in our voice lesson cd's and practice to that. She's six and likes getting some of her "school work" done while she's stuck sitting there anyways.

For kids who don't mind scary stuff, Coraline (read by the author) is really good. We haven't listened to the audio book version of The Graveyard Book (also by Neil Gaiman), but I'm reading the book to my kids now and they like it.

Cornelia Funke books are pretty entertaining. We've listened to Igraine the Brave, Dragon Rider, The Thief Lord, Inkheart, and Inkspell. (Then we couldn't get Inkdeath as an audio book so I had to read it aloud.) My kids also recently enjoyed Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel. (It's the first in a series.)

I'm bumping this awesome thread. ... And adding anything in Rabbit Ears series. ... Perfect selection of stories read by people like Ben Kingsley, Morgan Freeman, Jason Robards. Music too by great artists. Good for ages 6 to 11.

Story of the World is secular. We get lots of things from the library too, and half priced books.

We never go anywhere in the car without an audiobook.  It started out as a highly effective peacekeeping method, but now it's become part of our homeschooling!  Currently we are REALLY enjoying the Story of the World.  I cannot recommend that series enough, and it keeps ALL age engrossed.  Case in point, my 3yo informed Dh last night that 'some mean guys killed Cesar because he was getting too powerful."  Really!   Jim Weiss is a totally amazing storyteller for that series.

You've gotten many great suggestions, but for the age range that you have the Magic Tree House series is great and also holds everyone's attention.  Junie B. Jones stories are also enjoyed by all ages (including the adult drivers!)
