Swimmers- ?s about starting and equipment

Thread Starter
I was a competitive swimmer LONG, LONG ago. I miss swimming, but it's been ages since I swam regularly.

I just decided to join the community center, which has an indoor pool. And the kids are about to go back to school, which means I'll have TIME to go to the gym.

I know I'm going to have to work on stroke form and efficiency, because I've gotten lazy and sloppy in my strokes (in large part because I'm out of shape and it's easier to cheat). Does anyone have any links to good swimming workouts, especially for someone who's just starting again? Something like couch to 5k for swimming?

I'm also wondering where to get good quality swimwear. I need a good suit, goggles, a swim cap, and suprisingly to me earl plugs (I've never worn earplugs before, but my ears ached after spending a half hour in the pool this afternoon). What types of stores would carry these items, or should I buy online? Years ago when I swam Speedo was a reputable brand, but is the quality still good? I see Speedo goggles at Target

Speedo is still good, also Tyr. I would try a generic sporting goods store first. Here we have Dick's. That way you can get an idea what is out there. Then I'd head home to see if I could find better deals online.

When I was a kid I had chronic swimmers ear and had to wear plugs. It was before they came out with the wax ones and the Dr. recommended silly putty. It stayed in better than the wax plugs did for me (once they came out). I don't know if it would be a cheaper option or not; I haven't priced those items in recent history, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

Just wanted to let you know you aren't alone. I also used to be a competitive swimmer a LONG LONG time ago and I miss the pool. I've had a couple of false starts on getting back in the pool but I'm working on it.

I'll be watching this thread for any good resources.

I've been swimming a lot in the last year, and really like Swimplans for a website that has great swim workouts.

I get gear from amazon and suits from swimoutlet.com
