U/S pic - does it look like a boy?

Thread Starter
A couple of weeks ago we had an ultrasound. After finding the parts relating to the baby's gender, the tech without hesitation said "It's a boy!" But my first thought was that the view wasn't the same (as large or obvious) as the u/s we had with DS. Both were done around the same time of the pregnancy.

Since then, I've shown the picture to several people who said things like "I'm sure glad the tech knows what she's talking about", "I hope she's right", and "I've seen a lot of others that were more obvious than that."

So I thought this group here might have more experience than the others who have seen the pic & commented on it. What's YOUR opinion? Do you think we can safely assume it's a boy?

That certainly does not look like either of my daughters did and does look a bit like my son...

they can be a bit more obvious when the picture is taken from the side, rather than the bottom like that.

One of the first images I found on Google image search looks very very much like that (and was indeed a boy) http://thewordenfamily.org/pblog/ima...s_a_boy_02.jpg

that said, yes to me its obviously a boy and not a girl. Its a clear turtle (head and shell) rather than a hamburger (3 lines like this http://www.4dultrasound.co.za/2d_ult...age_girl_2.JPG )

I can't tell. Ours was a lot more... protrotruding. It could be a boy but I wouldn't buy too much blue unless I was personally convinced.

It isn't the most obvious boy shot I've seen, but it doesn't really look like a girl either.

What does your gut tell you?

Don't count on anything. My mom had four ultrasounds, all said boy according to the tech... and then I was so not a boy.

That being said, looks like weiner to me!

That looks like a boy to me. My first was a boy and then I had 3 girls and now this one is a boy too. You ultrasound does look like a boy. IF it is a girl then she has abnormally large vagina. Really abnormally large. There wouldn't be anything protruding at all if it was a girl. It would look like a McDonald's arch. 3 black arches which shows the two labia lips. But this clearly has a hot dog protruding out. Sorry about the references, but that was how it was explained to me at my ultrasounds. (I wonder if that is how they teach it in their schooling?)

That looks like the accidental glance I got with ds.

The labia with the McDonald's arch is usually seen later, when the baby has developed some body fat. This pic says the fetus is not even 19 weeks yet. It's still skinny. When I was working in ultrasound, "three lines" was an indication of a girl...like in this picture. I see three lines in the OP's pic. However, it's difficult to tell from a still-shot. Things can look quite different in real-time...angle and plane can make a huge difference in what things look like. An off angle can make it look like something's protruding when it's really not.

And a fetal vagina is not visible on ultrasound. You can only see the external genitalia.

Anyway, your technician has a 50/50 chance of getting it right.

Totally not helpful, but when I opened up the pic in the OP, my ds says, "Oooo. Space, Mama!"

So, there ya' go. Not boy, not girl...space.

Hmmm, I don't know. It protrudes like a penis, but it looks like it has three lines, which I've always understood to be girl. At 18 weeks it can be a little hard to tell!

the arrow you have in the pic looks like it is pointing at the foot, to be honest. i would not rely on what the tech said.

It looks more boy than girl, but I wouldn't run out and buy clothes just yet

It looks like a boy to me. I can see the legs and butt and you can see the scrotum and penis. It is definately not a foot. You can see the legs in the picture. I have seen penis or scrotum that look like three lines before. It looks very diffferent and the angle is different than the three lines from my dd u/s. It isn't as protuding because it is looking up from the butt and not straight on between the legs. It is a boy.

I would guess boy but not 100%!

This is my DD2, for comparison. You can see the 3 lines really well.

Also, I wanted to point out that the umbilical cord has 3 lines for the 3 veins, so could it be possible you're seeing the edge of that? Maybe not, I really have no idea, lol. You can see the big thick cord in DD2's ultrasound shot.
