Tired of being asked who my OB is!

“Who’s your OB?” Or “Did you talk to your doctor about that?”

OK, I admit, it’s petty & silly, but it’s driving me bonkers. HEALTHY PG WOMEN DON’T NEED OBs!

Midwives. Midwives, people! I have MIDWIVES!

Ironically, the last person to ask was my dentist. An OB seeing me (a very healthy woman with a low-risk pregnancy) is like him, the dentist, doing my regular cleaning! The dental hygienists do that. It’s a waste of resources & his specialization for him to do it. Exactly as it’s silly for trained surgeons to attend 90% of all births – including healthy, normal births.

It’s absurd that MWs attend such a tiny fraction of births in the US. (8%, I believe.) We all know the data show that they have better results for low-risk women. (Yes yes yes, there are bad MWs & great OBs! I don’t doubt that. But on the whole, MWs specialize in normal pregnancy & are, on the whole, less interventive, more patient, more attentive.) The US spends more on maternity care than most other industrialized nations with worse outcomes. Having healthy, normal pregnancy owned predominantly by MWs would be one great first step to fixing our horribly broken system.

It’s something I’m so passionate about that it just sets me off for people to assume I have an OB. So when I get those Qs, I want to launch into the above lecture. But I know they mean well & it’s a totally innocuous, innocent question & they don’t deserve a lecture! Ha! But I wanted to ‘vent’ here.

I kinda like looking at them like they're crazy and saying "oh no, I don't have an OB, I have a midwife" like they're the weird ones for suggesting I would have an OB. Generally I've had nice chats with people who find it interesting and have no idea about MWs like that midwives are covered by medicare like doctors are (I'm in Canada) or how much better the care is. I feel like I'm doing my part spreading the word about MWs. Maybe ppl aren't asking me often enough to get on my nerves?

I just outright say "my midwives are..." in response to who my doctor is.

The few times Ive had people shocked about it, its surprisingly only been that they did not realize that midwives still practiced.

Which is weird since one of them is married to a woman who works in a hospital that has midwives on staff!

I know better than to mention homebirth to most of my family though... when my family asks things like when I go to the hospital... I just respond with, when I go into labor...

However, DHs family... we have not outright told but they have asked if we are planning a homebirth and we are honest with them. They are a bit more educated than my family in the fact that homebirth is just as safe (if not safer) than hospital birth for a healthy pregnancy.

Are midwives currently licensed in your state? If not, would you be willing to put your passion and energy to work on a campaign to get licensure? Are you aware of the nationwide Big Push campaign?

I totally agree with the frustration with this crazy system in the US!

I do love the looks and reactions when I say, "Oh, no, I have a midwife!"

I had to a go to a doctors appointment for something unrelated and I said I didn't have a family doctor, just a midwife now that I was pregnant

Her response was "wow, what is that like?" and I got a "I have never heard of that before"

I was kind of like - um...you answer phones...keep your mouth shut on your opinions.

I think it's a weird question in the first place - and I see an OB! I can't recall anybody asking me that in all 3 pregnancies.

See, and I get sick of the one-raised-eyebrow-and-smirk that I've gotten from friends. Especially those that don't have kids! One day, I'm going to snap and yell, "Read a book, people!!"

I totally agree! I was thinking this this morning. OBs are trained to deal with medical emergencys, not normal healthy pregnancys. I am so glad we have the choice midwifes!

I get this a lot from other doctors. I saw my endocrinologist and she tested my vitamin D and it was low and she tried to prescribe me a megadose and when I reminder her I was pregnant, she said, "oh, don't fill that then. Ask your OB." Well....I don't have an OB! I wasn't sure what my midwife would have to say so then I guess I'm asking my family doc? Oh, and I had something weird on my leg and she told me to ask my OB about that too. Well, my midwife isn't going to know about skin stuff - she specializes in pregnancy, so I went to my family doc about that too.

Sorry, that was a long vent just to say that other doctors are the WORST at assuming you are seeing an OB. But yes, I get that question from EVERYONE.

Since my ectopic, I can say "I see Dr. X for gynecological surgery. His office has midwives for routine pregnancies."
