I don't think so. It's just a shortened form of "buttocks."

"Buttocks" sounds overly formal, for some reason.

Well my dd (20 mos) just started potty training and named her vulva her "boo boo"
I plan on telling her the proper name eventually, but right now "boo boo" is too cute!

Penis, vulva, scrotum, all fine words for what they are!

I believe "butt" is short for "buttocks"

I wouldn't consider it slang, just an abbreviation

From me talking about birth all.the.time at home my DH has gotten used to me using proper anatomical terminology

we don't use any nicknames for ds's parts, though we rarely name any of his body parts anyway. We only talk about body parts as they come up in normal conversation. "DH, it's normal for him to be playing with his penis" or "please don't pull mommy's hair!" or "DS hit his head on the wall"

Although "boobies" is slang...

We call them penises here. I'm not adamantly opposed to them calling it something else, but I default to the proper names and then follow their lead.

"Boobies" is totally slang, but I personally prefer "boobs" to "breasts". I'm not a fan of "titties" per se, but there is a time and place. Ds2 just called 'em "nah-sahs" (nursers).

My friends little girl called hers breasties she said they grow up to be boobies bobbies make milk.

Please teach him to say "penis"; if, god forbid, he should ever be in a situation where he needs to get help to stop sexual abuse, it may not be immediately apparent to his teacher, doctor, etc. what he is talking about if he does not know the proper terminology.

When my oldest son was your ds's age, I wanted him to use the uber-prudish "little boy parts" and exy thought it would be cute if he said "Richard" instead of "dick"; ds1 being ds1, it quickly became his "King Richard The Lionhearted"; another friend's son started calling his "my Dick Cheney"

Too, too cute, I agree, but dangerous. ds2 says "penis", "scrotum", etc. and is immediately understandable to ANY adult.

My two year knows that he has a penis and testicles and can identify both. It's a little harder for him to learn girl parts because they aren't as visible and because he doesn't have them. He used to point to me when I got out of the shower and say, "Penis," so now we have been teaching him that I have a vulva and a vagina. I'm sure it's confusing since he can't see my vagina. I know he doesn't have it yet because the other day he said, "Mama has a vulva...and a penis." So cute. If you ask him what girls have, he'll say gina.

We totally use the mostly proper words here. I can't bring myself to say vulva without giggling, so it's vagina.

Penis
Testicles, but DH says Balls
Vagina
Breasts
Butt
Butthole, never thought of saying anus..I probably won't

Penis was one of the first body parts DS could point to because DH taught him.

Ah that was something I had not considered - and yes while we do everything to protect our children, the statistics are terrifying. Which is one reason I do like refer to "your private area" with my niece (5 yrs), to help cement that it is not an area that she needs to allow people access to. However she has learned proper names until some people in her life (other side of the family I believe) became uncomfortable and taught her to say "crotch" which I personally can't stand I would much rather hear proper terminology!!! Hilarious story though, one day at my house she changed clothes and discovered my floor length mirror (she was at her phase of obsessing on body parts) so she bent over naked in front of it, looked back, and said "Look! I can see my penis!" So we ended up discussing what she had and didn't have lol.

LOL yes one thing DS is missing out on with his dad not a big part of his life

DD1, 4, knows that babies come out of vaginas, and she is proud to tell everybody that she wants to help pull babies out of vaginas when she grows up. She wants to be a "baby puller" and she gathered this terminology from watching birth videos with me
Too cute!!!

Well guess we will be going with penis. I have no problem saying the word - in fact my sister & I discussed today that I guess the penis jokes are over now LOL Well that time is coming soon anyway with a little guy around and starting to understand the conversation. I think that is a lot of the problem - we always say it is such a funny word, and to teach it to DS in a serious context feels awkward. But I am sure I will be saying it to him many many times in the future

We use proper words. For girls it's vulva and for boys it's penis and scrotum.

DS is very delighted with what he has to BTW, every diaper change he announces to whomever is changing him that he has a penis.

Well, I'm just like the OP. I'm having a hard time calling it his Penis too. I just didn't grow up like that. My parents never talked about our body parts and now I can see why I'm so hesistant to "say" those words around my son. Now, that I'm typing this I can clearly see that I need to embrace these words with him so that he doesn't grow up uncomfortable saying them like I did.

Now, we all hope nothing like that ever happens to our children (or anyone else's!) but if it ever did happen to my daughter and the perpetrator wasn't convicted because she couldn't adequately explain what happened to her to the police, I would never forgive myself for not arming her with the correct terms for her own body parts.

We say vulva, penis, and butt. My children know the words and what they are -- however, this has NOT stopped the older two from coming up with their OWN silly words for them!

Penis, Testicles (or balls, according to daddy), Vagina, Labia, Clitoris, Anus, Breasts - these are the only words we use. Except for "bum," I see no harm in using the word bum. "Glutes" is just too underused to bother with.
