I ordered three pairs of glasses from Zenni Optical earlier this month. They arrived today. I love them all!!!!!!

~ One pair of prescription sunglasses, which fit perfectly right out of the case!

~ One pair of everyday glasses, with two polarized clips (one for each car), which also fit perfectly right out of the case and I ADORE!!! I immediately switched right over to these and they are just wonderful in every way!!!!

~ One pair of computer glasses/inside/long day/spare pair. These are super cute and lightweight, but are flopping all over my face and I cannot see when I lift my head/eyes away from the computer screen (guessing from movement of glasses on face when I move). Technically, they are smaller in every way than both of the above pairs. I got out the itty bitty screwdriver set and adjusted all four screws I could find (tightened them all) and that helped a lot. However, the earpieces are straight and something is out of whack with the nose pieces (metal frames with silicone pads) and the glasses are still sliding around too much.

Can someone guide me on how to fit the glasses to my face better? Or, does anyone know which professional places will do this service for free (or a small fee) for glasses purchased online (aka not through their company)?

Thanks so much!!!

I think Eyemasters will fit glasses as well as Nationwide Vision. Most places *should* do it.

The glasses I got at Target, I was able to get adjusted several times at mall stores.... same with the Eyemasters glasses.... DS has Nationwide glasses and I got them adjusted at Target... LOL

I was never charged a fee for the adjustments. Our glasses need regular adjustments so I visit the optical dept frequently for a 'tune up' LOL.

ETA: I've also had the nosepads changed on my glasses at a store different than where I've purchased from for no charge.
Sounds like you need a full adjustment and possibly different shaped nosepads on the computer glasses! Get thy to a store

You might try GENTLY squeezing the nose pieces together so they hug your nose a bit tighter and don't slide up and down so much. I have also gently bent my ear pieces to hug my head a bit more, but depending on how fragile the frame is, I wouldn't recommend it unless you really know exactly what you need.

I would call a local optician (or just pop in at whatever's next to your errands this afternoon) and ask if they could do a quick fit assessment for you. If they're not busy, I'd think they'd just go ahead and do it quick and for free. It shouldn't be anything too elaborate that you should have to pay for.

I've had glasses adjusted several times at RX Optical that I did not buy there. I just stop in and ask if they could please help. I don't really point out that the glasses were not purchased there, and they have never asked.
The place at WalMart has also done adjustments for me (my kids are rough on my glasses) but I have not been impressed with what they have done.
It never hurts to ask!

Thank you all! I will plan to stop into my previous optometrist's office before or after class tomorrow (same parking lot) and see what they will do for me. If the same receptionist is there from when I used to go there, that'll be great since she always liked me (older lady who adored my DD and said I reminded her of her daughter or daughter-in-law).

Otherwise, I will pass a Costco where my current optometrist works. I wonder if they will fit my new glasses?

P.S. I've never heard of Eyemasters or Nationwide Vision or RX Optical. I'm guessing they are similar to Lenscrafters, which we have in malls. I don't have any plans to visit a mall soon, but I could make it a point to do so if that's what it takes!

I've used LensCrafters for glasses I purchased elsewhere. We have many free-standing ones, so you might just check their website to see what's around you.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I stopped into my previous optometrist this morning before class. He was between patients and was happy to adjust the wonky glasses. He said they were sitting too far away from my face and that was why I couldn't see out of them. He also made sure the fit was correct on the prescription sunglasses I was wearing when I walked in. He did a few minor adjustments (not noticeable to me). Then, he put them both in a machine to read the prescriptions. They match, which is what he wanted to check. He also asked me if I used their prescription and he was going to make sure the new glasses matched their records. However, I didn't use their prescription AND I haven't been to their office in over five years, so my records are in storage. I know the prescription is correct since I can see perfectly out of the other two pairs and the one matched the wonky pair. And, now I am wearing the once-wonky pair today! I wore them to class and now at the computer. Fit much better and I can SEE!!!! I think they still need further adjusting, though, because they move around too much still.

I was in Costco also today and popped over to the optical department. The optometrist herself was not in, but the eyeglass area was fully staffed. When my number came up, I just asked if she would adjust my glasses (favorite pair). She didn't bat an eye and took a critical look and slid the glasses around. Turns out, the nose piece was a bit too wide. Now they fit my face like a glove...better than any other pair of glasses I have ever worn before!!!

I am 100% happy with my Zenni Optical order!!!!!

After my next appointment (Jan 2011, I think) and we confirm a few lingering issues, I am going to bite the bullet and order transitional eyeglasses from Zenni. They are pricey, but a lot less than anywhere else and I already know which frames I want (same as my fave pair except a slightly different color).

Thanks again, Ladies!

See, folks are happy to help... glad it all worked out and you can see again!

I need bi-focals badly but I'm not willing to accept that fact yet... really 36 and bi-focals? this is just so not fair

Hey there Knittin' in the Shade,

I can certainly give you the exact glasses I got, but really it is going to depend on your facial shape and your likes and dislikes. I had a hard time narrowing it down, also. Ultimately, I know what shape looks best on my face and they aren't the "popular" styles right now, so I had to hunt. I took all the exact measurements on my current glasses (millimeter ruler required) and took a close look at my face in the mirror with my glasses on and at pictures of myself with my glasses on. I knew from those exercises that I needed larger lenses and a smaller frame than my current ones, but the same shape. I used that criteria to narrow down my choices. Also, I went to Costco and tried on various metal and plastic frames. I don't like plastic frames nearly as much as metal frames due to the weight and flexibility issues. I have a high prescription and that makes for heavy lenses, so I knew I needed lightweight frames and high-index lenses. I called Zenni to ask for guidance on this topic. The CSR was awesome and gave me a general rule of thumb and it worked out perfectly.

Okay, here's what I ordered and why:

1. everyday glasses - 452711 - $9.95 - metal alloy full-rim frame in silver. I like my glasses to blend in and not be noticed, but I needed the lenses to be bigger than my current ones since my eyes kept getting cut in half in photos. I ordered the 1.67 high index single vision lenses based upon the CSR advice (total cost is higher than $10 due to lenses and extras I got). They are perfect in every way for me!

2. computer glasses (back-up glasses/long day glasses/anything unusual) - 863624 - $8 - metal alloy with stainless steel temples half-rim frames in green. I wanted a fun pair of glasses and this is the way I justified them! I ordered the 1.61 high index single vision lenses based upon the CSR advice (total cost is higher than $8 due to lenses+anti-reflective coating). Since they are a smaller lens shape and a super lightweight frame, the thickness of the lens is not noticeable. I like these now that they fit my face, but I will note that they are questionable in my mind for durability/longevity. They just don't feel as sturdy as the other two pair. However, they suit my purpose of fun, flexible glasses that are VERY lightweight.

3. prescription sunglasses - 452916 - $8 - metal alloy full-rim frames. I wanted to try prescription sunglasses and these were super cheap. Total price was $12.95 (plus a portion of the shipping, if you want to get technical). You cannot order a tint on high-index lenses, so it was the standard 1.57 mid-index single vision lenses with a dark gray tint. I didn't bother with the anti-reflective coating since they are sunglasses and my biggest challenges with glare are night driving and the computer and inside malls and other places with fluorescent lighting. I purposely got a full-rim style since they "hide" thick lenses best and these do a good job. This pair is noticeably heavier than the other two pairs, but how long do you really wear sunglasses? Not all my waking hours, so it works for me so far.

Weight was really important to me because I get headaches with heavy things on my face and/or head. I weighed my current glasses as a guide and called Zenni. The CSR told me the weight listed was with the 1.57 lenses, but a lower prescription than mine. There was no way to know exactly the weight ahead of time, but I aimed for lower than my current pair fully expecting the end result to be about the same (at least for the everyday pair and the sunglasses). I went ultra low for the "fun" pair.

Old glasses = 18 grams
Old glasses + magnetic sunglass clip = 26 grams (too heavy for me for long periods of time)

New everyday glasses = 19 g
+ sunglass clip = 24 g

New computer glasses = 13 g

New prescription sunglasses = 22 g (These feel significantly heavier compared to both other pairs in my hands, but do not bother me while driving or walking around the neighborhood like my old glasses did with the clip.)

Hope all this chatting helps you or someone else!!!

P.S. The green computer glasses look the same color in real life as they do on my computer screen, but not nearly as bright. They are much more subtle in real life, but still different enough and fun for me. The blue sunglasses do not look the same color in real life as on my computer screen. I like them better in real life and they could even be non-tinted glasses for me since the color is more subtle than I was expecting. I could have gone a lot darker for sunglasses, but I really like them as is. The glasses I want as transitionals are 452716, which are the same as my everyday pair but in a blue color.
