I *think* she lives by me... its about 105 degrees and humid now... NO ONE is outside (and we have a cooling trend here) gotta love living in the desert.

Seriously, if the kid falls off his bike, looses a sandal, etc he will get 2nd degree burns from the sidewalk.

Okay, I get it about the heat-- it doesn't get that hot here. The hottest we're likely to get is about 97, and those are unusual (well, maybe not THIS summer ). So yeah, I guess I can see about the heat, if the child is out for hours.

But my DD1 played outside alone at 4, as long as she was within a distance where I could look out the window and see her. And my twins are 3 1/2, and can play outside on the sidewalk or out back alone, as long as they again stay close enough for me to look out and spot them (although I'll confess I watch them more constantly than I watched DD, but I don't let them know I'm watching). It's pretty normal here where I live for kids to start playing out alone at about 5. I guess it's not that way everywhere, though.

Its funny b/c on another board I asked if I should let my 3yr old ride his bike around the block, and people thought I was nuts for even considering it.

I'd probably send my ds out to go talk to the kid too! (he would totally ask him a ton of questions about exactly what he was doing!)
