Any cast tips?

DS cracked his elbow over the weekend, it turns out, and now he's in a cast from his thumb to his shoulder. Luckily it's not his dominant hand.

I've never had a cast. What if it itches or is sweaty? He's not supposed to get it wet, either. Sigh. I'm grateful it's only for three weeks. Any tips?
thanks,

So sorry! DD broke her elbow in March and from the time she broke it until we got the cast off it was 8 long weeks! The first 2 weeks were in a splint and that was a lot harder to deal with than the cast.

We used one of these for bathing but she had the full arm cast like your DS and we never got an airtight seal. It was fine for bathing but we wouldn't have trusted it for swimming: http://www.drycorp.com/

We had to give up some shirts that were too difficult to get on with the cast. I found lots of activities and games that she could do single handed.

She never really complained about itching. She had it off by late May before it got really hot. I had to be really careful about washing that armpit. It was really awkward to reach, difficult to avoid getting the cast wet and scrub it well.

Once the cast was off, it took a few baths for the dead skin, etc. to come off completely.

Good luck!

My ds thankfully only broke his hand so he was casted from the middle knuckle of his fingers to almost his elbow for 6 loooong weeks. We did the trash bag thing for showers. Put the trash bag on and tape it around the limb, then fold the edge over and tape it between the skin and plastic. It worked well enough for us and he showered almost every day - he played lacrosse in the cast. It smelled really bad by the time he got it off....
