Corn Cobs for Dogs

I let my dog have my corn cob tonight. It seemed innocent enough, and she took the time to chew it down like she would a bone... But DP asked me if corn cobs were ok for dogs, so I googled "corn cob for dogs" thinking I would find reassurance. I didn't! I read all kinds of warnings. Can be fatal, can cause intestinal blocking...

So I guess I am just hoping someone here has had their dog survive the eating of corn on the cob. She is not sick right now, but just ate it 3.5 hours ago. I would hate myself if anything happened to her! She trusted me and I handed her the cob.

FWIW: She is a 3.5 year old australian shepherd/husky. She weighs about 50 pounds, and she usually eats very daintily... ie she would never just swallow done a large chunk of anything.

TIA

We have removed numerous corn cobs from dogs. Please keep an eye on her. They are one of the most common foreign bodies I have seen in the intestine. So far they all had to be removed surgically.
Watch for vomiting, diarrhea (stool willl leak around the cob), inappetance, no bowel movements, straining to have a bm.
The corn cob will show up on xrays (always a fascinating one to see).
I hope she passes it...otherwise it may have to be surgically removed.
All the best!

She is good! Healthy as a ham, and super goofy as usual. I guess we can be thankfull that she is so lady-like and refuses to swallow down big chunks of anything. She hasn't had any problems doing her business, no stomach cramps, no change in food or water intake. All in all the best, most cuddliest, most wonderfullest dog in the world! Maybe someone else will have a similar scare and I will be able to reassure them.

Thank you, lone girl! You are the 1 out of 80 people who read my post and took the time to respond. You rock!

I am so glad to hear that she is okay! I never knew that corn cobs were harmful for dogs. I have a dog who likes to get into the trash when we aren't here (if I forget to put it up), and this time of year there are frequently corn cobs in there. I will be extra sure to make sure the trash is out of reach!

I am glad to hear she is doing so well!! It's nice to hear good stories after so many of the complicated cases we see at work.

Another vote for this is very dangerous and I am so glad she is OK. Great news.
If you would have found out sooner you could have made her vomit it back up, or given her extra bread or canned pumpkin, etc. to help. What a scare.
Continue to watch her closely. Sometimes foreign objects can take awhile to cause impaction in some cases.
