What snacks are you feeding your 10 month old?

And by snacks, I mean healthy, non-juicy (read messy) finger food that DH can give him during the times that big brother is snacking on things the baby isn't ready for? Like right now DS1 is eating a nighttime snack of peanut butter on pita and the baby is standing at his chair begging for a bite, which he obviously can't have. I don't want him to have empty calories, but I also don't want to have to put him in his booster chair so that he can feed himself fruit or veggies for just a snack.

Obviously I don't want to give him Puffs, but if there is a healthy, non-processed version of something similar, I'd love to hear about it. DH just asked if he could give him Joe's O's and I said no.

Any ideas for a healthy, not too messy baby snack?

- plain cherrios
- pieces of bread
- crackers
- grated/chopped cheese

So, we are not going to be doing grains early on, because they're not easy for young bodies to digest, so my list will be more skewed towards veggies:

avocado slices
baby carrots or carrot sticks
raisins (if your baby has no problem with little food pieces)
cheese
hard boiled egg yolks (whites if he has shown no allergy issues)
celery sticks
salad leaves

we love rice rusks, they have only 4, maybe 5 ingredients if you do the veggie version. they dissolve, so they are lot less messy than biter biscuits.

I get that peanut butter is a possible allergen, but you could totally give your 10 month old a strip of the pita bread. DS chews on sections of tortillas when we eat out at mexican restaurants (and has, since he was about 7 months old, I think)

It might be slightly messier, but you could put hummus on it if he wanted a spread like your older child.

veggie sticks are always a good option, and pretty not messy.

There are several organic Cheerio-type cereals that have very few ingredients and no sugar. Rice cakes are a big hit here, crackers, we just started goat cheddar, spoon feed goat yogurt or applesauce, carrot sticks, peeled broccoli stem, apple, grapes, bread (we're gluten free, but eat corn tortillas and brown rice bread).

DS1 loved avocado spread lightly on ww bread.
Macaroni with olive oil and garlic

beans or chickpeas (I cut the chickpeas in half)
small cooked pasta like macaroni (I give it plain as a finger food)
steamed broccoli florets
cheerios

BEANS all the way!
i cannot praise the usefulness and ease of beans enough...don't get me started. those babies love them. they're high in protein and iron (i add olive oil or a vinaigrette or salsa or something to add fat and flavor.) they're super easy to pop open a can. and not messy. i love beans for babies!!!!!

ok for the rest...blueberries, yep the grated cheese is pretty non-messy, hard boiled egg (we did the whole thing, no allergy issues), toast strips with a little spread (peanut butter, jarred puree that we never used, butter, hummus is good but super messy for some reason,) agree with the rice cakes, non-messy fruits like pear or cantalope slices.

i'm not with you guys on the avocado slices, those were the messiest of all. and the salad greens were no good for us. it's really hard for them to gnaw without molars and the leaves just end up getting stuck to the roof of the mouth or somewhere near the back of the throat. even my 12 month old blw food pro who has gagged all of 2 or 3 times still has trouble with greens. she almost yacked last night on spinach.

*I'm* obsessed with those stupid strawberry flavored rice things- I forget what they're called, but they're organic toddler somethings. V loves them, but mostly *I* love them because they are very delicious. And also cute.

Otherwise I have nothing to add, but will be watching this thread closely!

if you feed your baby canned beans *please* get the low sodium ones.

otherwise, as long as you get them from a fresh source, they are super easy to cook, so much more tasty, and basically zero sodium if you cook them yourself.

Beans all the way! Cow peas (aka black eyed peas), chickpeas, pintobeans, black beans, you name it, DS loves them all. He eats organic O's here and there, a hunk of bread/tortilla on occassion, and diced boiled veggies (potatoes, carrots, etc).

We have the apple version of these. Three-year-old DS also loves them.

Where do you find rice rusks and the strawberry rice thingys? I went to Whole Foods yesterday and could not find either.

I did get some puffed brown rice though. We will see if he likes it. It tastes like, well, nothing.

I buy rice rusks at Whole Foods, the brand is Baby Mum Mum. I've seen them at Target too. And DS likes the puffed brown rice. We often put some on his tray at the start of meals, he likes picking it up and eating it.

Other finger foods at our house include beans, halved or quartered grapes, green peas, Snap Pea Crisps (few ingredients but salty, so not too many), small cubes of cheese, green beans. At Mediterranean restaurants he'll gladly chow on some pita bread, but we haven't done it much at home.

So far, DD enjoys cut up fruit (nectarines, banana, grapes etc.) and veggies (cooked carrots, potato, etc.), cheese, organic puffs, organic maple teething biscuits, bits of bread, or tastes of whatever I'm snacking on.

I do see the irony of posting this while eating Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream, though.

ETA: Just noticed you wanted non-booster-chair viable snacks. I just pop things into her mouth then--makes for a little less mess, but she's getting wise to me, I think.

Ten months? In particular reason he can't have Joe's Os. Most babies love cherrios. We particularly like the Whole Foods store brand. Much better flavor and nutrtition profile than puffs, organic or not.

A small piece of toast? Steamed veggies? Yogurt?
