Can I ask for this...

I just found out yesterday that the new school DS is going to doesn't have an afternoon recess. We are just learning to navigate all the school stuff since his PDD-NOS diagnosis in May. They have a morning and a lunch recess, classes resume at 12:50, and then dismissal is at 3:05. So he does get out earlier than he did in his previous school, but he might have a problem with a 2-1/4 hr stretch. He is a sensory seeker and needs movement...but he might also be fine...I guess it would depend what is going on! I have a meeting with the principal this morning to discuss his IPP...can I ask for him specifically to have a few minutes to burn off some steam in the afternoon?

Why do they do that...geez...I am such a believer in recess...

I'm not that familiar about the Canadian laws, but in the US, that would certainly be something they could put in the IEP, and a very reasonable request.

Thank you! Well, I'm off...not exactly sure what awaits me...

I'm in the US also but this is something I would push for as it is necessary for him and would ultimately make things easier for them if he gets what he needs.

Definatly something that can be put in an IEP, My son has extra "body breaks" throughout the day (we have a balanced day system here two breaks - 10:40 and 12:50 for 40 minutes)
My son gets a 10-15 minute time in the morning about 9:30 and in the afternoon about 2(if he dosn't have gym)
The let him run outside in good weather, race a rollercart in the hall in winter or give him a heavy work activity to do (he is king of the composter - with the assitance of an aid he collect the compost from the rooms and takes it out- it takes about 15min and he loves it)
what grade is your son in?

I think it went pretty well. I guess this was just a prelim., and we'll be meeting again in a few weeks to get it all down on paper. We discussed my concerns and sort of made a plan for what to do in the meantime. He'll have an EA, which I'm not sure he has a need for in the long run, but she will probably be a good thing in the beginning to help him with the transition. This is a new town, new students and teachers, new school, not French Immersion, which he was in previously...there are some big changes this year, and it's not something I had thought of, but I'm really happy that he's going to have someone to help him get sorted out!

PS...and thanks for your replies...we're kind of feeling around in the dark here with all of this.
