We home school, my DS just turned 6 in August. Starting K with him.
I've not pressed reading skills but he's absorbed some letters/sounds and is really great at hearing the phonics of blending the word. So we are doing some Progressive Phonics Alphabetti (hysterical stories -- so 5-6yo humor). He can recall some words (I think he's mostly memorizing whole words by sight or context) and blend the words if I prompt with some letter sounds. But on his own, he's really not recalling many letter sounds. I'm trying to think of some activities to really link the visual with the auditory. He's very auditory and very kinesthetic, but not so visual. He's quickly bored by Starfall although we can do some of that or other sites.
I'm thinking about making letters from playdough and then matching to real objects with letter sound matches with a scavenger hunt.
Or do a letter a week and cut our the shape, glue sound objects to it (feathers on F, etc)
We made the progressive phonics "build a letter" pieces from salt dough. I really like using those.
Any other ideas. ???
And waiting. I know. It's been easy to wait til now because he is so "boy" and on the move. But now he wants to read and seems to have the other phonics skills -- he's just not visually recalling those letters!! He'll totally get it while we play, then not remember it when we see it again.
