BLW - is this normal?

My DD is 8.5 months old and we only just began introducing solids due to her food sensitivities. We only give her low allergenic foods to start with. They are usually steamed and given to her as finger foods. She spends the whole next day straining and generally doesn't poop until mid-late afternoon (usually she poops first thing in the morning). Last night she gagged on a piece of summer squash and then proceeded to throw up everything she had eaten and all the milk from before dinner. It was sort of disturbing. Do your little ones gag and puke? Do solids tax their digestion like this, making them uncomfortable and constipated?

I can only speak to the gagging and puking here, which is totally within a normal range. My DS (now 6) has a really weak gag reflex and threw up way more than the average kid. Still now at 6yo if ANYTHING triggers his gag reflex he pukes. Some kids are simply more sensitive and I look at it this way.. If your DD is gagging and puking then there is NO way that she's choking.

We had a few puking incidents and lots of gagging for the first few weeks. It's been two months now and dd almost never gags any more. (Just an aside, the puking usually only happened in front of my dissaproving MIL...lovely!)

Dd's pooping pattern changed immediately too. Her pattern sounds just like your dd's. The part that continues to confuse me is that the consistency is still very liquid, so I don't really understand the straining...

My dd, especially, did the gagging and occasional vomiting thing. It was kind of disturbing, but she grew out of it. Ds doesn't seem to have as much trouble with it.

Neither of my kids really had the straining to poop thing happening. If they seemed to have trouble after I introduced a certain food, I'd wait another month or two before trying that food again.

Is there anything easier to digest than steamed summer squash?

And Ruby, yes, I don't get it either. All that straining and her poop was BM poop with some summer squash mousse in it.

Have you tried using a Chiropractor??
My little one at two months refused to nurse properly and I learned from my midwife that using a chiropractor could sometimes sort it out.
You do need to find a chiroprator that specializes in pediatrics..and ask about a pallet/jaw adjustment.
After only two session I notice a world of difference with baby!!

I'd try pear, carrot, potato, or yam. I started with green beans and zucchini, but it took my kids a little while to be able to digest those (I mean pass them through apparently untouched, but without painful gas, etc. )

gagging, puking....we did a couple times.
you could just add some pear slices or prune juice to the meal to help with the poops. they really do change immediately after starting solids.
